Second Tourist Drowns in Waters off Pulau Sapi

KOTA KINABALU: A 63-year-old Japanese tourist drowned in waters off Pulau Sapi here yesterday barely a day after a South Korean holidaymaker died near the same spot.

Junko Noguchi, who was on holiday with her daughter Noguchi Kayo, 36, was seen struggling in fairly-shallow waters off Pulau Sapi.

Another tourist pulled her out of the water, but she was already unconscious.

Lifeguards failed to resuscitate Junko and she was taken on a tour boat to the mainland and rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. She was pronounced dead on arrival.

A local businessman who saw what happened said the woman was swimming in waters not more than 1.2m in depth. The man, who wanted only to be identified as Lim, said the sea was calm and the weather fine at that time.

A 48-year-old South Korean woman drowned at almost the same spot at about 11am on Tuesday.

Late yesterday afternoon, state tourism officials called an emergency meeting with tourism players to discuss means to better respond to emergencies at the islands.
