16 Hotel Lobbies vying to be Prettiest in Klang Valley

KUALA LUMPUR: The lobbies of 16 hotels in the Klang Valley and Putrajaya are decked in colourful flowers as they vie for the RM10,000 prize in the Hotel Lobby Floral contest being held in conjunction with Flora Fest 2007.

Judges inspected the hotels on Wednesday and yesterday. The results will be announced tomorrow.

Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur, one of the hotels taking part in the contest, based its decorations on Malaysia’s multi-racial make-up.

“Our hotel’s entry is themed 'Colours of Hospitality', where different coloured flowers represent the various races,” the hotel’s communications area director Rosemarie Wee said, adding that the decorations took three weeks.

Among the flowers used were orchids, chrysanthemums, hibiscus, heliconias, roses and anthuriums.

Tourism Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Victor Wee launched the hotel's entry yesterday.

Eastin Hotel, another participant, chose to base its decorations on the fauna and flora of Sabah and Sarawak.

Marketing and communications manager Jade Tan said the two states were rich in unique flowers and wildlife, which included many species of butterflies and hornbills.

“We wanted to introduce visitors to the beauty of nature there.”

The Eastin decorations took two days to put together.

Members of the public have been urged to use public transport to the Floral Parade at Persiaran Perdana in Putrajaya tomorrow.

Rapid KL and Nadiputra buses link the Putrajaya Sentral transport hub with the venue.

Putrajaya Sentral can be reached via KLIA Transit high-speed train and Rapid KL buses from Kuala Lumpur, Serdang, Bandar Utama and KL International Airport.
