Sports Tourism Draw

State Tourism Development and Environment Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow said the Penang Municipal Council would organise two new sports events – the Penang Paintball World Cup and Penang Eco-Challenge.

The paintball event would be held at the Municipal Park from Dec 14 to Dec16 while the eco-challenge would be held in Balik Pulau on July 28 and July 29.

“We hope the Penang Paintball World Cup will be a major success.

“We have asked the 35 Tourism Malaysia officers based in foreign countries to promote these events,” he said after jointly opening the Pe-nang Municipal Council Calendar of Sports events together with state Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Jahara Hamid on Monday.
Also present was council president Datuk Abu Bakar Hassan.

Teng said the sports tourism events would kick off with the Pe-nang X’treme Games at the Muni-cipal Park from March 17 to March 18.

“This year will see the return of the Penang Beach Carnival after a 10-year hiatus,” he said, adding that the event would be held in Batu Fer-ringhi on May 26 and May 27.

Teng said the Penang Bridge Ma-rathon on June 24 was poised to be the most popular sports tourism event this year as it would attract at least 18,000 participants.

The event would also attract about 2,000 spectators, he said.

The other sports tourism events lined up are the Penang Biathlon on Aug 5, Penang International Moun-tain Bike Challenge from Sept 1 to Sept 2, Kayuh Lasak Penang Mountain Bike Jamboree from Dec 1 to Dec 2. The three events will be held at the Municipal Park.

Abu Bakar said the respective associations and non-governmental organisations would be roped in to make the events a success.

Jahara said the state hoped more sports promoters and event companies would organise programmes in Penang.
