KUALA LUMPUR: Flower power brought the early morning traffic at Dataran Merdeka to a standstill yesterday.
Colourful human "flowers" sashayed along the scenic route while not far from them, waiters gingerly balanced trays of drinks.
The 800 "flowers", "plants", "bugs" and "mermaids" were the costumed participants of the Florathon 2007 to kick off Flora Fest 2007 being held in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year.
They were taking part in a 3km fun walk from Jalan Raja towards Jalan Cenderasari before returning to Dataran Merdeka.
The event was organised by Tourism Malaysia through the Kuala Lumpur Tourism Action Council with the co-operation of Kuala Lumpur City Hall.
Held concurrently with the florathon was the Bunga Raya Waiters’ Race, organised by the Food and Beverages Executives’ Association for those in the hotel industry.
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor flagged off both events.
Participants were judged not on speed but the creativity and originality of their floral-themed costumes.
The morning drizzle failed to dampen the spirit of the participants, who wowed the spectators with their innovative costumes.
Participants from the Aquaria KLCC stole the hearts of the judges with their creative floral mermaid and sea-life costumes, clinching the florathon’s top prize of RM1,500, a three-day, two-night stay at De Palma Hotel in Kuala Selangor, RM500 worth of shopping vouchers from Sungei Wang Shopping Complex, as well as tickets and vouchers from the Aquaria and Imax theatre.
Other activities were also held, including a colouring contest, cooking demonstrations and a flower arrangement contest which ensured everyone had a fun time.
