Malacca Aims for Six Million Tourists this Year

MALACCA: The state government is targeting to receive six million tourists in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2007.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said 137 events had been planned for the year to attract tourists.

Mohd Ali had earlier welcomed the first batch of 40 tourists from Pekan Baru, Indonesia, to Malacca at Batu Berendam airport.

He said there were more than four million visitors to the state last year.

He expressed gratitude to Riau Airlines for bringing tourists from Pekan Baru.

“The Pekan Baru-Malacca flight is on a daily basis, and with our new aircraft, we can fly in more tourists than before,” said Riau Airlines manager Heru Nurhayadi.

“In 2005, we flew in a total of 12,600 passengers and 17,000 last year. We hope to increase the number flying into Malacca to 27,000 this year,” he said.
