KUCHING: At least 30,000 tourists from China are expected to visit Sarawak in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 (VMY2007).
Sarawak Tourism Board marketing executive Catherine Lau said with the aggressive VMY 2007 promotional drive abroad, Sarawak is expected to assist Malaysia to achieve the target of 20.1 million tourist arrivals for 2007.
According to the board’s statistics, some 19,000 tourists from China visited the state in 2005, and the arrivals increased by 15% the following year, she told reporters on Sunday.
Earlier, she welcomed the arrival of 24 media representatives from Beijing at Kuching International Airport.
Lau said the effort to bring foreign media into the country should have a positive impact on the development of Malaysia’s tourism sector.
“Such measures to promote Malaysia will have a positive impact. It is less expensive and has been practised by other countries,” she said.
The foreign media group from China will be in Sarawak for seven days. They will visit several places including Miri, Sibu, Mukah, Kuching and Mulu.
“They will be taken to visit several interesting places like Mulu National Park, Niah Caves and longhouses,” she said. — Bernama
