Fatal Swim for Russian Tourist

KOTA KINABALU: A Russian tourist died after a swim off Karambunai near here yesterday.
Boris Puchkov, 59, took a dip at about 10am and a lifeguard at a nearby resort spotted him struggling in the water and rushed to help him.

Puchkov was pulled ashore but was pronounced dead at the Sabah Medical Centre 30 minutes later.

He was among the first group of Russian tourists who arrived here on a chartered flight from Moscow on Dec 30, for a month-long visit.

Kota Kinabalu district police chief Asst Comm Ku Chin Wah confirmed the incident.
The Russian's death is the latest in a series of tragedies involving tourists in Sabah. Earlier this week, a boat carrying 11 people, including seven tourists, capsized in rough seas near Sandakan.
Just after the New Year, two women – South Korean Baek Misook, 48, and Japanese Junko Noguichi, 63 – drowned a day apart while swimming around Pulau Sapi near here.
