Waterfall Site Closed after Two Deaths

LANGKAWI: The upper section of Telaga Tujuh recreational area has been temporarily closed following the deaths of two tourists.

The two tourists died in separate incidents about 22 hours apart.

The first victim, Badrun Mohammad Anwar, 17, died on the spot after he tripped and fell 50m down while trekking up the multi-level waterfall site with a group of friends on Saturday.

The second victim, Jamel Salleh Shifa, 33, tripped and fell 10m down at about 10.30am yesterday.

Police have ruled out foul play.

Badrun, from Saudi Arabia, was a student of Multimedia University's Malacca campus while Jamel was a tourist from Khartoum, Sudan.

Langkawi district officer Mansor Ismail said the recreational spot was temporarily closed to facilitate investigations.

“We are only closing the upper section. Investigation might take several days,” said Mansor, who is also the Langkawai security committee chairman.

He said the respective embassies have been informed.
