Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd will spend RM38mil to set up an additional 32 check-in counters and build another aircraft parking bay at the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas.
Its senior airport manager (Penang) Abdul Wahab Mohd Yusof said RM12mil would be spent on the new check-in counters and RM26mil on the aircraft parking bay.
“There are now 32 counters and 15 parking bays in the airport,” he told newsmen at the welcome reception for tourists at the airport yesterday in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2007.
He said work on the projects would start this month.
The counters are expected to be ready by the end of the year and the parking bay in December next year.
The projects, he said, were planned since 2004 but could not be carried out in time for VMY 2007 because of technical difficulties.
Abdul Wahab said 14 airlines and 11 cargo companies were operating at the airport which received 3.1 million passengers last year with the number expected to increase by 10% this year in view of VMY 2007.
A 42-inch plasma TV set and eight clocks displaying the time of major cities in the world were recently put up at the baggage claim area and departure hall respectively in conjunction with VMY 2007.
Earlier, Penang Tourism Hospitality Committee chairman Cheang Chee Gooi led a 10-member group to welcome 560 tourists who arrived on flights SQ192 (Singapore Airlines) from Singapore, FD3543 (Air Asia) from Bangkok and CI673 (China Airlines) from Taipei.
The passengers were welcomed by a kompang group and bunga manggar bearers.
They were each given a beaded necklace and a souvenir bag containing preserved nutmeg and tourism brochures.
Among them were Scottish couple Phil and Lyn Flanders who were here on a four-day holiday.
Phil said they planned to visit the Penang Snake Temple and Penang Hill.
