Bangkok-Langkawi Maiden flight to take off on Sunday

AIRASIA Thailand’s maiden flight from Bangkok to Langkawi is set to take off this Sunday, a week ahead of its scheduled flight on Jan 13.

Kedah Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Fong Chok Gin said the rescheduling was good news in view of Visit Malaysia Year 2007.

“The airline's Airbus A320 has the capacity to carry 200 passengers to Langkawi,” he said.

“We are also expecting about 800 tourists to cross the border from Thailand into Kedah at Bukit Kayu Hitam daily,” he said.

“Thais are also expected to visit Langkawi using the sea route from Satun in southern Thailand.”

Fong was at Bukit Kayu Hitam yesterday to welcome the first batch of tourists arriving in Malaysia in conjunction with VMY 2007.

The visitors were pleasantly surprised by the grand ceremony to welcome them.

They were given goody bags and treated to traditional dance performances.

Fong said the Kedah Government took full advantage of the existing cordial relationship between local and southern Thai tour agents associations to woo more visitors to the state.
Of the 2.8 million tourists estimated to visit Kedah this year, 70% are expected to head for Langkawi, he said.
