KUCHING: Sarawak will for the first time host a rainforest-theme mass wedding for 100 couples from China here in July.
Sarawak Tourism Board marketing executive Catherine Lau said the couples would join thousands of music lovers at the Rainforest World Music Festival at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Damai resort near here.
The three-day festival from July 13 would be a grand one to mark its 10th anniversary.
Lau said after the mass wedding, an event supported by Tourism Malaysia, the Chinese couples would continue their honeymoon in Terengganu.
“The number of tourists from China increased by about 15% to more than 21,000 in Sarawak last year.
“Our target is to get at least 30,000 Chinese tourists this year,” she said when welcoming 24 journalists from TV stations, travel and publications.
Lau said the Mulu National Park, a world heritage site, was the biggest attraction to tourists from China. Sarawak went for a tourism promotion roadshow to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou last September.
She said a consortium of six travel operators in Beijing, four in Shanghai and six in Guangzhou were now actively selling Sarawak packages.
“A charter flight using Southern Airline aircraft is due here from Hangzhou, China on Feb 18 for the Chinese New Year celebration,” she said.
