OVER 80 per cent of the targeted 20.1 million tourists this year are expected to be from Asia.
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the projection was based on the statistics of visitors on the first day of Visit Malaysia Year on Monday, which showed that 80 per cent of the 50,000 tourist arrivals were from the region.
He said the ministry was grateful to all state governments, especially those in the northern states as well as in Sabah and Sarawak, which had held warm receptions at entry points for the first batches of tourists arriving for VMY2007.
"We hope this will lure more visitors into the country to experience what Malaysia has to offer," he told reporters after handing over school necessities worth RM40,000 to more than 100 students here.
