PULAU REDANG (TERENGGANU): Efforts to turn some of the islands in Terengganu into world-class holiday destinations will be carried out carefully so that there is no damage to the natural state of the islands.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh cautioned that at the same time rates for the facilities for tourists at these islands, especially accomodation, should be reasonable.
`We can't place pricey tag for tourists like Maldives where accommodation would cost nothing less than US$1000,'' he said after visiting village settlements here on Wednesday.
He said the islands here are at par or even better than those in many parts of the world.
`The beauty of our islands have vast potential to attract tourists if the are developed systematically,'' he said.
Idris said the state government will discuss with Terengganu Riverine Coastal Authority (Trevicosta) to closely monitor the developments of the islands.
`Any developments at the islands cannot be done without proper planning and there should be a mechanism to control this,''
Idris said the rich green surrounding and marine life should be maintained and not destroyed.
Meanwhile Trevicosta's director Datuk Wan Zahari Wan Ngah said the construction of hotels and resorts in islands here should be diligently evaluated so that there would be no negative impact on the environment.
Wan Zahari said while taking care of the needs for accommodation minimal land should be used.
