Tourist drowns off Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: A 31-year-old local tourist, on a holiday with his office colleagues from a Kuala Lumpur-based company, drowned off Mamutik Island here.

Leong Sheung Sing apparently got into trouble while swimming after lunch yesterday and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here at around 3pm.

His colleagues, who were at the hospital declined to talk to the media, with one of them only saying that they arrived here on Thursday and stayed a night at the island itself.

According to witnesses, the lifeguard spotted Leong struggling in the water and immediately rushed into the water, pulled his unconscious body out and rushed him back to the mainland on a speedboat.

A police spokesman confirmed the incident and said that a post-mortem would be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.

In another incident, workers at a construction site in Tanjung Aru here found a World War II bomb at about 3.30pm yesterday.

The police bomb squad said they were waiting for the bad weather to clear up before defusing the bomb.
