KUALA LUMPUR: The event to announce the launch of AirAsia X, a new long haul budget service by Fly Asian Xpress (FAX), started late and the ballroom was packed with a few hundred guests.
As AirAsia Bhd chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Tony Fernandes took the rostrum, he apologised for the delay.
“We are always on time, but it was the shortage of seats,” he said, drawing laughter from the floor.
Fernandes recounted that when he was young, his parents used to complain that it was expensive to fly to Europe.
“Now, with the introduction of AirAsia X, everyone can now fly ? extra long. We are proud of being able to continue to lead and revolutionise the aviation industry in Asia, just as we did with AirAsia. Ultimately, the launch of AirAsia X will bring independence to the long haul low-cost traveller by providing a choice of service for their long haul travel requirements,” he said.
At a media conference later when asked how FAX planned to finance the purchase of aircraft, Fernandes replied: “As you leave the room, please donate generously.”
On the branding of AirAsia X, FAX CEO Raja Mohd Azmi Raja Razali said the X would give it a mysterious feel to the airline. Though AirAsia X will ride on the AirAsia brand, the airlines will be operated by separate management teams.
