AirAsia will start direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and here by next month, said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
He said discussions had been held with AirAsia and Firefly to consider direct flights from Aceh and Medan to various states in Malaysia.
“One of the problems faced by the airlines is the absence of a Customs, Immigration and Quarantine centre,” he said.
Speaking after opening the Plaza Medan Fair to promote the Visit Malaysia 2007 Roadshow here yesterday, Tengku Adnan said:
“Indonesia is the third-largest contributor to tourist arrivals after Singapore and Thailand. A growth of 26.4% tourists from Indonesia has been recorded in 2006 compared with 2005.
“There is definitely a great potential seeing as there are approximately 45 million people in Sumatra.”
