THE reason Visit Malaysia 2007 will be extended to next year is not that there has been poor response .
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor told the House that it would be appropriate to extend VM2007 since the country was celebrating 50 years of independence this year.
He said the celebrations should last one year as the country would
achieve the 50th year of independence on Aug 31 this year and the 51st on Aug 31 next year.
“It will be great if we continue our efforts to attract tourists to see the beauty of the country and the tolerance and development that had been achieved over 50 years.
“The extension is not due to a lack of tourists, as we had 3,101,691 tourists in January and February, which was a 9.3% increase compared with the same months last year,” he said while answering a supplementary question by Datuk Raja Ahmad Zainuddin Raja Omar (BN – Larut).
Raja Ahmad had asked if the reason for the extension was that the Government wanted to increase the profits or if there was a drop in tourist arrivals due to the floods in Johor.
He also asked if the ministry was planning to hold events that involved Chinese superstars to attract more Chinese tourists.
Tengku Adnan said the ministry had planned to invite more film industry players from around the world and make Malaysia a destination for film festivals.
