Two more marine parks in Terengganu

Two more islands here have been gazetted as marine parks.

This brings the total number of marine parks in the state to 13.

With the latest additions, Terengganu now has the most marine parks in the country, followed by Johor with 11 and Pahang with nine.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said Pulau Yu Besar and Pulau Yu Kecil were gazetted for conservation reasons and to boost tourism.

"Once people know that we are taking care of our islands and preserving nature, visitors will come," he said after chairing the weekly exco meeting.

Idris said the marine parks would have more fish stock which would help the fishing community and spur the growth of coral reefs.

Among the marine parks in Terengganu are Pulau Redang, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Kapas and Pulau Lang Tengah.

Idris also said that the state government would soon be grading its rivers and beaches to ensure that they were maintained according to international standards.

Idris said the Terengganu Riverline and Coastal Authority would monitor development projects while enforcement would be carried out by local authorities, such as the district offices and municipal councils.
