Penang's Storm in a T-shirt

Less than three months after they were smartened up with new T-shirts, Penang's trishaw riders are not looking their best.

In January, a tourism trishaw programme was launched in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2007.

Trishaw riders were given new yellow and blue T-shirts, and umbrellas for their trishaws. Some were even given a free haircut. They were also given sightseeing information on their routes so they could make a visitor's ride more interesting.

Asked by local media about the rebranding of the trishaw riders and their new image, one rider complained he didn't get a T-shirt and he even had to pay RM2 a day for the Visit Malaysia Year signboard on his rented trishaw.

Penang Tourism Trishaw Services Committee chairman Looi Swee Cheang said he was aware of the problems. "We will have to wait for other sponsors before giving them another round of T-shirts," he said.
