Tourism sector in Selangor doing well despite bird flu outbreak

The Selangor tourism sector is doing well despite the bird flu outbreak scare in the state, Selangor Tourism, Health and Consumer Affair committee chairman Datuk Dr Lim Thuang Seng said.

The local tour agencies here remained optimistic on the arrival of tourists to the state, he added.

He said the state government did not get negative feedbacks from foreign tourism agencies so far.

“We are certain about the performance of the tourism sector here although the government does not have the latest statistic to show,” he said after launching the Klang tour guide handbook at Klang Municipal Council here on Friday.

Being transparent in handling the bird flu issue was the main reason why the tourists continue to have confidence in visiting Selangor, said Dr Lim.

“We are not hiding anything from the public on the issue and they know the actual situation,” he said.

The bird flu outbreak in Selangor was an isolated case, he said added that the government had taken quick action and everything was under controlled now.

“Selangor is a safe place for visitors,” he added.

It was reported early last month that bird flu virus had been found in Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir near Sungai Buloh in Selangor after 60 poultry died over three days.

Dr Lim also said Selangor recorded 1.2mil tourist arrivals in the first three months of this year, a 17% increased compared to last year.

The state was targeting 5.2mil tourists this year. Last year there were 4.9mil visitors, which was above the targeted number of 3.9mil.
