New Sun Inns Hotel in Puchong

SUN Inns Hotel Group opened its latest hotel in One Puchong Commercial Centre, Puchong, recently to cater to businessmen, families and tourists travelling on a budget.

The group’s director Ng Hong Keat said the hotel provides clean, safe and afforable accomodation, and Puchong was chosen as the location because it is a developing business township.

Comfortable: A twin room at Sun Inns Hotel in Puchong.

The 100-room two star hotel is the sixth under the group’s belt after Bandar Sunway, Ipoh, Kuala Selangor and Seri Kembangan.

Three types of room — twin, double and family — are available at RM100 or below per night.

“All rooms are air-conditioned and have attached bathrooms. We provide free Western and local breakfast, such as roti jala and nasi lemak in our restaurant,” Ng said.

Kinrara assemblyman Teresa Kok, who officiated at the opening ceremony, said inexpensive lodging was needed to promote tourism and provide convenience to travellers with budget constraints.

“The local authority had a vision to only allow hotels with high star ratings when Sun Inns was setting up this branch.

“But I have a different opinion. This is not a high class community, so it is important to have affordable accomodation,” she said.

Big Hike In Hotel Room Rates In Hulu Selangor

Two weeks before nomination day for the Hulu Selangor by-election, the rates of highly-sought hotel rooms, shop lots and empty houses have shot up by several times, with some reaching RM20,000 a month.

This small sleepy town, more affectionately known as KKB by locals, has very few hotels and rest house, and the rooms available are less than 50.

"All 21 rooms at Seri Melati were taken up, a day after the member of parliament died. The 12 rooms at the Government Rest House were booked by the Selangor Government while Seri Teratai Melati Guest House only has six rooms," said a hotel operator here.

According to him, the Kem Bina Semangat in Ampang Pecah near here and Kalumpang Resort and Training Centre, were also booked as political parties, security forces, government agencies and the media scrambled to get rooms for their members and staff.

Empty shoplots and houses were fast taken up, with prices ranging from RM3,000 to RM20,000, including those without basic facilities. They are normally priced at between RM500 and RM2,000.

"The owners wants cash on confirmation. The demand is so great as the stakes are high...we are having headache to get rooms for our colleagues from other states," said a government agency official.

He said some political parties had gone as far as Genting Highlands, Rawang, Fraser Hill and Tanjong Malim to get rooms for their operatives.

Meanwhile, a number of banners have been put up at several locations here and Batang Kali, promoting former Selangor menteri besar Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib as a possible candidate for Barisan Nasional, and Datuk Zaid Ibrahim for Parti Keadilan Rakyat.

The seat fell vacant, following the death of incumbent MP Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad of PKR due to brain cancer on March 25. Nomination day is on April 17 and polling on April 25.

Hulu Selangor, measuring 174,047 hectares, is as big as Melaka and has over 64,000 voters. It starts from Hulu Bernam, which borders Tanjung Malim in Perak and stretches to Serendah. Also in the constituency are Kuala Kubu Bahru, Ulu Yam, Batang Kali, Kalumpang, Bukit Beruntung and Bukit Sentosa.

Sunway Pyramid building into the future

The Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall plans to be Malaysia's biggest mall by size within the next five years

The Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall in Selangor is likely to overtake the Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur as the country's biggest mall by size within the next five years as it adds two new phases to the mall.

Called "SP3" and "SP4", the two phases form part of Sunway City Bhd's (SunCity) planned development on a 2.35ha open car park land adjacent to the existing Sunway Pyramid and the Sunway Lagoon Theme Park.

Currently, Sunway Pyramid has a total gross floor area of 4.5 million sq ft, with a net lettable area (NLA) of 1.7 million sq ft.

Chief executive officer of Sunway Group of Shopping Malls, H.C. Chan, said SP3 will see 500,000 sq ft added to the gross floor area of the mall.

He did not say what the NLA will be, but typically 65 per cent to 70 per cent of a mall's gross floor area makes up the NLA.

"SP3 and SP4 have been planned and should be ready within the next five years ... it is a sizeable addition," Chan told Business Times in an interview.

He said timing of their launch would depend on economic conditions.

Phase SP3 of Sunway Pyramid features a small-office-home-office (SOHO) suites development to be built on 0.73ha.

While Chan declined to reveal details about Phase SP4 of expansion, it is understood that it will include retail, office blocks and residential units on 1.62ha.

"Integration and physical connection is our first priority," Chan said of the mall. The two new phases will be linked to the existing mall.

"We are building into the future, the mall is already big. So, we have to think of niche and innovative ways to attract consumers," Chan said of the concept the mall may have.

The new project will also increase the number of parking bays in the mall, hotel and theme park area by 2,000 to 9,500.

Today, Sunway Pyramid's larger rivals include the Mid Valley Megamall and the Gardens with a combined NLA of 2.5 million sq ft and 1 Utama Shopping Centre in Petaling Jaya at 1.85 million sq ft.

Its smaller rivals are One Borneo in Kota Kinabalu with a NLA of 1.5 million sq ft and Pavilion Kuala Lumpur at 1.37 million sq ft. Suria KLCC together with its upcoming space will have some 1.18 million sq ft of NLA.

Apart from Sunway Pyramid, SunCity also manages Sunway Carnival in Seberang Prai, Penang and Sunway Giza in Kota Damansara, Selangor.

One World sees RM70m revenue in bustling 2010

THE five-star One World Hotel in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, expects 2010 revenue to touch RM70 million, a 30 per cent jump from last year, as the improving economy sees the hotel hosting more functions and filling up more rooms.

Last year, like most hotels, it was hit by the global economic downturn. Its revenue declined by 15 per cent from RM64 million posted in 2008.

The hotel, owned and operated by property developer See Hoy Chan Holdings, filled just over half its 438-room inventory and garnered an average room rate (ARR) of RM310.

General manager Ho Hoy Sum said his forecast for 2010 follows an encouraging fourth quarter in 2009, which has continued into January this year.
"The fourth quarter of 2009, which was one of our best ever quarters, had helped narrow the shortfall of the first nine months of last year. January 2010 is doing better than January 2009," Ho told Business Times in an interview.

Ho hopes to grow contribution from the leisure group, which now makes up 5 per cent of its guests profile to 10 per cent.

Improved performance will also be a result of its strategy to have a bigger online representation and attending international tourism events, including the Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) and International Tourism Boerse (ITB).

Ho expects that the hotel's recent awards - The BrandLaureate - SMEs Chapter Awards 2009 and Malaysia Tourism Awards 2008/2009 - will further lend support to its performance.

One World makes just as much from food and beverage as it does from room revenue. Of the RM35 million expected from food and beverage this year, some 40 per cent comes from banqueting events.

Even though this hotel may just be two-and-a-half years old, it recently spent RM2 million to upgrade some of its rooms to better compete with additional room inventory that will come on stream this year with new hotel openings.

"Whenever there is a new player, there will always be an impact, as people tend to want to try new things. We are not going to wait for them (competitors) and only then react.

"We have done some soft refurbishment that adds class to our room and enhances it," he said, adding that the changes and additions were made after listening to its customers.

Changes include installing massage chairs in the executive suites, exclusive Harnn & Thann amenities, complimentary laundry and in-room premium coffee/tea machines.

Hotel plan gives PJ folk the blues

PETALING JAYA residents are fuming over a proposed development of a 19-storey hotel along Jalan Utara which will aggravate the traffic chaos in the area.
The site is located between an ongoing commercial development and the SMK Bukit Bintang, at the junction of Jalan Utara and Jalan Semangat.
Residents in the area got to know about the development when a signboard was put up at the currently vacant land, informing the public about the proposed development and giving them until Nov 3 to submit their objection.
The sign states the proposed development would be a 19-storey hotel built on top of three levels of basement and one level of semi-basement carpark.
High traffic volume: PJ residents say the proposed hotel plan (on the left) along Jalan Utara will only add to the congestion in the area.
Section 12 Residents Association chairman R. Rajasoorian said that the area was already overdeveloped and building a hotel there would make matters worse.
“That stretch is going to be a mess and the hotel is going to be located right at the T-junction. Traffic is already bad now without the hotel,” he said.
He added that besides the secondary school (SMK Bukit Bintang), there was also the SK Sri Petaling primary school across the road.
All Petaling Jaya Residents Association (Apac) chairman Liew Wei Beng said that he was concerned about the density of the developments in the area.
He said that there was also a church next to the Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital which would also add to the congestion.
“Once the high-density commercial blocks are ready, the traffic impact would be mind-boggling,” he said.
He said that an existing hotel down the road has already proven to create traffic problems when there were big functions and cars would be double-parked along the road.
He echoed Rajasoorian’s concern over the hotel’s proximity to the schools.
“I’m not sure if its advisable to have a hotel next to a school,” said Liew.
A spokesperson for Malton Berhad, who submitted the proposal to the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), said that they have addressed the traffic problems in the area.
“A traffic impact assessment (TIA) has been done and the impact from the hotel would be minimal.
“It’s a mid-ranged hotel that would cater to the short- and mid-term stays of the business people from the offices around the area, so we are not expecting a high volume of traffic. There would be no big function rooms in the hotel,” he said.
He said that as part of the council’s requirement to build the commercial development, they would widen a stretch of Jalan Utara starting from the Jalan Semangat junction.
“We would be adding an extra lane on both sides of Jalan Utara,” he said.
Rajasoorian also expressed his disappointment at the then Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) councillors who approved the commercial project without residents’ knowledge.
“If the present council under the current state government closes an eye to the problems we are facing here, we would be back to square one,” said Rajasoorian.

Mamoth Empire - Shopping Mall, Suites, Office Tower & Boutique Hotel to Open In Subang

A FOUR-in-one RM450mil project is expected to be fully operational by the first quarter of next year in Subang Jaya.

Situated in SS16 near the Subang Jaya KTM station, The Empire Gallery Subang Jaya consists of a five-storey shopping gallery, 210 Soho suites, 12-storey office tower, and a 13-storey boutique hotel.

The total gross built-up area is 0.46mil sq metres with four levels of basement car park, providing 15,000 parking bays.

In his speech at the recently held topping-off ceremony, Mammoth Empire Holding Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Sean Ng said: “The vision was founded on the belief that a niche destination as Empire Shopping Gallery would be a valuable add-on to enhance the overall strength of the retail precinct in this part of Subang Jaya.

“Our foray into this project will complement and enhance the presence of other established malls such as Subang Parade and Carrefour to offer better varieties and choices in shopping, travel, business and lifestyle needs.

“The Empire Hotel Subang is a homegrown boutique hotel with international competitiveness, strategically located in the heart of Subang — the up-and-coming regional travelling hub of the nation.”

At a press conference before the ceremony, Ng said they were still choosing quality tenants. About 70% of retail space have been rented out.

“Empire Shopping Gallery is designed to be a lifestyle and contemporary centre that Subang Jaya would be proud to call its own.

“There will be a selection of F&B choices, and key players in the fashion, lifestyle and beauty industry.

“We believe that we are the only shopping centre to dedicate an entire floor for world-class education and entertainment for children,” he said.

Mammoth Empire Holding group executive director Danny Cheah said shoppers and visitors could expect a shopping gallery that was different as much emphasis had been placed on the interior.

“We have selected many fine pieces from various parts of the world to create an international feel, but the ambience will be comfortable and welcoming,” he said.

When asked about the traffic condition, Cheah said the Traffic Impact Assessment was done three years ago to study the projection of traffic.

“We can cope for the next 10 years and I foresee no problems.”

At the ceremony, guests were treated to a sumptuous spread and a performance by local songbird Ning Baizura.

Eleven new hotels by 2011

New rooms not expected to cause oversupply in the Klang Valley

PETALING JAYA: The Klang Valley will see 11 new hotels by 2011 although some newly planned projects will be delayed due to the uncertain economic climate, property consultants said.

These hotels are mostly three- to five-star rated, comprising a mix of foreign and local brands.

Malathi Thevendran ... ‘New entries into the market should weigh the pros and cons first.’

Based on recent research, the hotel sector would have an additional 4,000 rooms upon the completion of these hotels, they said, without giving an estimated value of the projects involved.

CH Williams Talhar & Wong Sdn Bhd (WTW) managing director Goh Tian Sui said the new supply of hotel rooms in the next three to five years would not lead to an oversupply in the market as demand was still intact.

“More people will start travelling again when the global economy recovers. And later more foreign brand hotels will come in to expand their operations here,” he told StarBiz recently.

Goh said that coupled with more budget travel packages offered by airlines like AirAsia, more tourists would be visiting the country, thus boosting the domestic hotel business.

“Moreover, the average hotel room rate in Malaysia is the cheapest in the region,” he noted.

Although the hotel industry is currently doing not so well due to the Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak and global financial crisis, Goh sees a positive outlook for the hospitality industry.

Goh Tian Sui ... ‘The average hotel room rate in Malaysia is the cheapest in the region.’

There are currently 103 hotels (both foreign and local brands) with three- to five-star ratings in the Klang Valley, providing a total of 33,484 rooms.

According to WTW’s latest research, there will be an additional 297 rooms by year-end, 1,845 rooms in 2010, 992 rooms in 2011 and 553 rooms in 2012.

“Average occupancy rate in (upcoming) years will be around the current level of 60% to 70%, which is the historical average level,” Goh said.

Average room rates at present for hotels in Malaysia range between RM250 and RM600, according to Goh.

Zerin Properties chief executive officer Previndran Singhe said the company expected eight new 5-star hotels to be launched after 2011 in the Klang Valley, worth RM2bil to RM2.2bil.

Previn sees the Klang Valley needing more branded budget hotels in five years’ time.

Leo Kuscher ... ‘Hotel business is cyclical, so there will be demand.’

“Budget hotel is set to be the next growth market in Asia,” he said, adding that many investors were taking positions in the Malaysian hotel sector as they realised that the country’s tourism industry was underrated.

International real estate consultant Jones Lang Wootton executive director Malathi Thevendran said the Klang Valley, the main economic centre of Malaysia, had consistently recorded the highest number of hotel guests in the country, increasing to 20.5 million in 2008 from 16.7 million guests in 2004.

“Although the opening of more four- and five-star hotels may heighten competition in the local hotel scene, they (especially the new brands) will enhance the global awareness of Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley in totality as an international destination for leisure, culture and meeting,” she said.

But she noted that developers of four- and five-star hotels were cautiously monitoring the market to avoid any oversupply in the long term.

“Hence any new entries into the market should weigh the pros and cons prior to making inroads into the local market,” she added.

Malathi concurs with Previndran that budget accommodation is always good investment as budget-conscious business travellers downgrade to cheaper accommodation during these challenging times.

“Overall, the mid- to long-term outlook of the Klang Valley hospitality industry remains positive as it has received strong government support to grow further,” she said.

The 5-star Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur, soft-launched in April, expects to achieve 55% occupancy rate by year-end.

Its general manager Leo Kuscher told StarBiz that there appeared to be an oversupply of hotel rooms in the Klang Valley and the current market was very competitive, affecting hotel room yields.

“However, the hotel business is cyclical, so there will be demand,” he said.

Operated by Boustead Hotels & Resorts Sdn Bhd, The Royale hotel chain also has three 4-star hotels, namely The Royale Bintang Kuala Lumpur, The Royale Bintang Damansara and The Royale Bintang Resort & Spa Seremban.

The hotel operator plans to launch The Royale Bintang Penang and The Royale Bintang Suria-Damansara, with 300 rooms each, in the second quarter and end of 2010 respectively.

Meanwhile, TA Enterprise Bhd managing director and chief executive officer Datin Alicia Tiah said it was too soon to comment on its two hotel projects in Kuala Lumpur. TA said in an email reply that it had not started any hotel project in Malaysia.

“Construction of the new hotels will start next year and be ready only in four to five years,” the company told StarBiz.

Car thieves flee ambush in PJ Hotel

There was high drama at a hotel car park here yesterday afternoon when shots were fired as car thieves rammed into a police car while trying to flee from an ambush.

The thieves had turned the hotel car park into their "storage area" and were bringing a customer to view a stolen vehicle when they realised they had walked into an ambush.

The thieves had earlier tried to steal another vehicle in the car park, but had to abandon the car when police moved in.

The drama began in the morning when hotel staff discovered a road tax disc on the floor.

Checks revealed the road tax disc belonged to a Toyota Hilux, which had been stolen on Saturday.

They traced the owner and contacted him.

"I went to the hotel car park on the basement floor and saw a vehicle which resembled mine.

"However, the road tax disc and registration plates were different," said the owner.

"I tried using my car keys to open the car door and it worked. I felt something was amiss and alerted the authorities," the owner said, adding that he had lodged a police report over his stolen vehicle on Saturday.

A team from the Selangor police headquarters arrived at the scene and they realised that the thieves had parked the stolen Hilux there while waiting for the buyer to collect it.

A police official said that at about 2pm, three men in a Toyota Camry entered the car park and began driving around.

The first time they passed the waiting police team, there were three men in the vehicle.

"The second time round, there were two men in the Camry as one of them had got off to steal a new Toyota Altis, which was also in the car park."

When the thieves in the Camry circled the Hilux a second time, the police team moved in, and on seeing them, the thieves in the Camry slammed in the reverse gear and floored the accelerator.

As they attempted to turn the vehicle around, another police car blocked off their escape route.

The Camry then rammed into the police car, forcing the policemen to fire two warning shots.

The Camry, however, sped off and exited from the hotel car park. Meanwhile, the other thief in the Altis abandoned the vehicle near a fire exit and escaped on foot.

Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Arjunaidi Mohamad confirmed the incident, saying police were trying to track down the Camry, which had heavily tinted windows.

Three car thieves managed to escape a police ambush by ramming a police car in a drama-filled afternoon at the car park of a hotel here.

The ambush was set up when the hotel staff came across a Toyota Hilux earlier in the morning which they suspected was stolen.

An ambush was set by a team of Selangor police as it was believed that the thieves had parked the car there to wait for a buyer.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed said police spotted three men in a heavily-tinted Toyota Camry entering the area and circling the car park suspiciously.

The suspects panicked when they saw the cops and tried to reverse but a police car had blocked their way.

ACP Arjunaidi said the thieves rammed the police car and managed to escape, forcing the policemen to fire two shots.

Budget Hotels Secretly Filming Sexual Acts of their Hotel Guests

BUDGET hotel operators videotaped their customers having sex and then sell the “movie” to VCD and DVD operators for RM1,000 to RM3,000 each, according to Harian Metro.

The activities were uncovered by the daily’s reporter who posed as a member of a pirated VCD syndicate.

He met the hotel operator who showed him a specially decorated room for rent to couples.

The operator, identified as Jimmy, 30, told him that hidden cameras were fitted in the room facing the bed.

According to Jimmy, he would choose a suitable couple, mostly teenagers and college students, for his movie.

After recording their act, the copies were sold to the syndicates to be made into pornographic VCDs.

Jimmy also received RM5 as royalty for each copy of VCD sold.

The reporter found that the VCDs were sold at outlets in Petaling Jaya as Asia Bagus Vol. 1 to Vol. 27 on its cover.

An outlet owner, known as Peter, told the reporter that there were VCDs of couples making love taken from all over the country.

He said the ones in demand were those from Malacca as the women were beautiful.

THE police will investigate claims that budget hotels in Klang are being used to film couples having sex before selling the footage to pornographic VCD and DVD sellers.

Klang OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Mat Yusop said police had not received any reports of rooms at budget hotels in Klang being fitted with hidden cameras to capture couples in action before this.

“The report in the Malay daily is the first that we have heard of such incidents taking place and since it is illegal to have such cameras in hotel rooms we will definitely carry out investigation soon,” he said.

He said fitting rooms with cameras without the knowledge of the occupants was a serious offence as it was an invasion of privacy.

He said the making and selling of pornographic VCDs and DVDs was another offence and the police wanted to put a stop to it if the claims were true.

He said police would also interview the journalist who wrote the article to shed more light on the matter and assist in investigations.

It was reported in a Malay daily yesterday that some budget hotels in Klang had special rooms fitted with hidden cameras placed in the television set and the air-condition unit.

The DVDs and VCDs were sold for between RM10 and RM18 each and featured mostly teenagers and students from institutions of higher learning.

The journalist, who claimed to have gone undercover and spoken to some hotel owners, wrote that a 23 volume set of DVDs of the sex romp was worth up to RM3,000, besides the royalties on each copy sold.

Paya Indah Wetlands to reopen next month

THE Paya Indah Wetlands in Dengkil, Selangor, which has been closed since February 2005, will be reopened next month.

A soft relaunch will be held for the 3,100ha sanctuary filled with some 210 species of residential and migratory birds and 26 species of mammals, including four Nile hippopotami.

According to park superintendent Salman Saaban of the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), the reopening date would be decided by the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry.

Almost done: Work on the Paya Indah Wetlands is almost complete.

“Perhilitan will also seek a meeting with the Selangor state government to update the new administration on the progress of rehabilitation work at Paya Indah,” he said.

Salman said that Selangor state tourism, consumer affairs and environment committee chairman Elizabeth Wong would also be briefed on the beautification and repair works at the park.

The Selangor state government and the state Wildlife Department had signed a memorandum of understanding on Aug 1 last year to make the department responsible for conserving and managing the wetlands for 30 years.

The Federal Government had invested RM160mil into the mega project meant for nature conservation when it opened in October 2001. It took over the park management after the Malaysian Wetlands Foundation disclosed that revenue from the wetlands was not enough to meet operating costs.

The park will reopen once the landscaping and mechanical and electrical works totalling RM11.1mil have been completed by contractor Gema Padu Sdn Bhd.

Once the wetlands reopens, Perhilitan will focus its efforts on conservation and research while attractions like angling, boating, cycling and nature walks in the recreation zone will be privatised.

Hotel treats its 300 workers to a durian feast

Party of a different kind: The hotel workers enjoying themselves at the durian party.
EMPLOYEES of the Grand BlueWave Hotel Shah Alam were treated to a durian feast recently.

“Instead of the usual monthly birthday celebration where we serve either buffet lunch or high tea, we came up with the idea of a durian fest,” human resource and administration director Mohd Gazali Sayed said.

“Not only did we enjoy the delicious D24 durians, we had a good time interacting with each other,” he said.

A one-tonne lorry transported loads of D24 durians, rambutans and mangosteens for the 300-strong staff of the hotel.

“We had to make sure the staff members didn’t overeat as the durians were incredibly good,” Mohd Gazali said.

He said it was the management's way of thanking the staff for their hard work during the month of July, the busiest time for the hotel.

“It was definitely a good change from having buffets. Even though durian is not my favourite fruit, I thoroughly enjoyed the mangosteens and rambutans. It was fun seeing my colleagues enjoying their durians,” said purchasing assistant Nik Khamsiah.

“For instance, as part of the ongoing Malaysian Mega Sale celebrations, we have come up with a “scratch & win” contest where we have contributed 10 vouchers for a 3–day, 2-night stay here,” Ho adds.

Tourism sector in Selangor doing well despite bird flu outbreak

The Selangor tourism sector is doing well despite the bird flu outbreak scare in the state, Selangor Tourism, Health and Consumer Affair committee chairman Datuk Dr Lim Thuang Seng said.

The local tour agencies here remained optimistic on the arrival of tourists to the state, he added.

He said the state government did not get negative feedbacks from foreign tourism agencies so far.

“We are certain about the performance of the tourism sector here although the government does not have the latest statistic to show,” he said after launching the Klang tour guide handbook at Klang Municipal Council here on Friday.

Being transparent in handling the bird flu issue was the main reason why the tourists continue to have confidence in visiting Selangor, said Dr Lim.

“We are not hiding anything from the public on the issue and they know the actual situation,” he said.

The bird flu outbreak in Selangor was an isolated case, he said added that the government had taken quick action and everything was under controlled now.

“Selangor is a safe place for visitors,” he added.

It was reported early last month that bird flu virus had been found in Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir near Sungai Buloh in Selangor after 60 poultry died over three days.

Dr Lim also said Selangor recorded 1.2mil tourist arrivals in the first three months of this year, a 17% increased compared to last year.

The state was targeting 5.2mil tourists this year. Last year there were 4.9mil visitors, which was above the targeted number of 3.9mil.

Boulevard's Wild Rice Restaurant Buffet Line

EVERY time a new dish is created at the Wild Rice Restaurant, the chefs ensure it first makes its appearance in the buffet line.

“Placing a new dish on the buffet table is the best way to find out if patrons like it,” said executive sous chef James Koh, who would also make his rounds asking patrons for feedback as well as suggestions on making the new dish a regular offering in the restaurant.

Salad offering: Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken Pesto.
Currently, Koh, who had offered his specially prepared Prawn Mee in the buffet spread, is happy with the response from diners who not only gave him tips and feedback but also requested that it be available outside buffet hours.

Koh, who had previously worked in Australia, recently introduced the new and popular line-up in the main menu.

“One of our signature dishes here has got to be the B Burger,” said Koh, who had initially created the burger with a beef patty coupled with double cheese, egg, tomato, lettuce, cucumber and gherkin, all tucked neatly into a fresh sesame bun and served with French fries. Now in the new menu, the burger comes with a choice of either a chicken patty or the original beef patty.

Pasta passion: Chili Tuna Fettuccine.
The restaurant is open 24 hours a day and is a mere stone’s throw from the hotel’s swimming pool.

On weekends, according to Koh, dishes like Chicken Lor Bak and Whole Crispy Spring Chicken served in a basket with French Fries and Prawn Crackers are a big hit with families who dine by the poolside.

“These are things that every one in the family can share and have fun eating while taking a break from the pool,” Koh explained.

Vegetarian dishes such as Spaghetti Ala Napolitana, Deep Fried Popiah Rolls, Indian Vegetarian Set and Avocado Fruit Burger with French Fries are also on the menu.

Popular with patrons: Koh with (from left) Chicken Lor Bak, Seafood Curry Mee and Penang Prawn Mee.
For dessert, Koh said nothing could beat fruit dipped in chocolate sauce and topped with cream.

”When we had our chocolate fountain during the buffet sessions, it was such a big hit among patrons that we decided to put it in our a la carte menu so that our patrons can have it at all times,” said Koh.

Other favourites at the restaurant include the Mini Crispy Yam Ring filled with sautéed Mixed Vegetables, Diced Chicken and Cashew Nuts, Creamy Smoked Seafood Pie and Chilli Tuna Fettuccine.

Career change that spelt sweet success

THE creative touch is evident at the cake section of the various outlets in Sheraton Subang Hotel & Towers.

Whether it is dainty pastries or elegant cakes that you want to sink your teeth into, they just look too good to be eaten!

The sweet afters have all been given a fresh, novel touch by chef Chiew Siew Chuan, the hotel’s newly appointed executive pastry chef.

Yet, with all that creativity with which he is obviously blessed, Chiew said pastries were not something he had set out to do. His early career revolved around figures, a stark contrast to things creative!

“I studied accountancy,” admitted Chiew. “But while waiting for my exam results, I decided to take a job in a bakery, which gave me my first taste of kitchen work and bread making,” said the KL-born chef.

He did not fare too well in the exam so he decided to continue where he had left off in the bakery.

Deft hands: Chiew putting the finishing touches to the pastries that look too good to eat.
Chiew started as a kitchen helper in 1987 before being promoted to junior baker a year later. He was later appointed assistant pastry chef and then pastry chef in 1994, moving through the ranks at various hotels.

Today, with 20 years of experience in the pastry kitchen, Chiew brings with him to Sheraton Subang skills that have won him many prestigious awards internationally.

They include a bronze medal at the Olumpiade Der Koche, Erfurt Germany (2004), a gold medal with distinction in Pastry & Bakery Showpiece (Culinaire Malaysia 1999), a gold medal in three-tier wedding cake category (Culinaire Malaysia 1993), and another gold medal in Pastry Showpiece (National Culinaire Competition 1990).

An impressive entry in his resume is his four-year stint as pastry chef at the Royal Palace in Amman, Jordan.

Just how did he get invited to work for the Jordanian royal family?

“It was probably the need for a change in environment – and perhaps a better pay cheque – that I found myself looking for jobs overseas.

“The head hunter to whom I submitted my resume called to inform me about a vacancy at the Royal Palace in Jordan which was looking for a pastry chef then.

Chocolate lover’s delight: The Mango Mousse in Chocolate Topping is just one of the innovative and novel creations by Chiew.
“Well, I decided to take the plunge, so I packed my bags and headed there with my family,” recalled Chiew.

“Throughout the four years, the constant challenge was always to come up with new recipes, which demands that one be very creative.

“There were always VIPs from around the world dropping by at the Palace and I had to prepare for huge banquets all on my own. I had no helper, no assistant, so the stress level was definitely high, especially in the first two years,” said Chiew.

But the stint, said the 38-year-old, was a satisfying, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In his current role at Sheraton Subang, Chiew is in charge of ensuring consistency of quality in presentation of dessert and bakery items, leading his team of 10, maintaining safety and hygiene in the pastry department, food costing, and menu engineering.

He also speaks on the ‘Cake of the Month’ special promotion which highlights a particular cake each month.

This month, it is Pecan Cheese-cake, available at the hotel’s CafĂ© Aroma.

“I think my strategy here will be to try to be as creative as possible. People like to see changes and try new stuff, so we will try our best to cater to that adventurous palate,” added Chiew.

70 dishes for Japanese Buffet Dinner at Holiday Villa

Freshly made: A chef preparing California Rolls.
TWICE a week, diners at the Seki Tei Japanese restaurant in Holiday Villa Hotel and Suites Subang Jaya are spoilt for choice: they can take their pick of more than 70 different dishes, ranging from the simple Ehire Chawan Mushi (Steamed Egg Custard with Stingray Fin), tucked neatly in a large dim sum basket, to Sukiyaki – thinly sliced beef or chicken simmered in broth together with assorted vegetables and fresh mushrooms.

The restaurant is divided into several sections, with a particular range of food offered in each nook. The outlet also has private rooms with Japanese-inspired windows and dim lighting.

Adding to the atmosphere, waitresses clad in full turquoise kimonos guide diners to their seats and serve at food counters.

Diners can try their hand at preparing their own Japanese BBQ skewer with their choice of ingredients from options that include chicken, beef, prawns, shitake mushrooms and chicken wings, which go perfectly with the Teriyaki sauce or the Shioyaki (salt) available.

At the front of the restaurant are a few stalls, decorated in true Japanese style, that offer Sukiyaki, Japanese BBQ Skewer and a selection of noodles, ranging from Ramen and White Udon to Buckwheat Soba and Mocha Soba (Japanese Green Teaflavoured Cold Noodles). Diners can eat the noodles with either the Clear Soup or the Nameko Miso Soup (Soya Bean Paste Soup).

All-time favourites like fresh salmon, butterfish, oyster, boiled octopus, sashimi, octopus, Japanese pickles, tempura, California rolls, Unagi Kabayaki (Grilled Eel), Ebi Shogatani (Grilled Prawn with Salt), Niku Tofu (Simmered Beef cooked with Tofu), Lamb Sansho Yaki (Grilled Lamb with Japanese Pepper) and Chikuzeni (Simmered Mix Vegetables cooked with Japanese Soya Sauce) are available, too.

Keeping warm: Ehire Chawan Mushi (Steamed Egg Custard with Stingray Fish) in a bamboo basket.
The buffet is priced at RM70++ per person and is available only for dinner every Friday and Satur-day.
