The Tourism Ministry expects more than two million tourists from Indonesia to visit Malaysia this year.
Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said 1.2 million Indonesians, out of the total 17.55 million tourists, visited Malaysia last year, from 962,957 the previous year.
Malaysia recorded 151,636 tourist arrivals from Indonesia in January, an increase of 52.1 per cent from 99,721 people for the corresponding period last year, he said.
"With encouraging performance and high potential of the Indonesian tourism market, we anticipate the number of tourists from Indonesia to exceed two million this year.
"We hope for continuous cooperation and support from industry players, travel agents and airline companies in Indonesia," he said when launching the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 (VMY 2007) campaign at a dinner here Thursday night.
Tengku Adnan is on a three-day working visit to Medan and Banda Aceh since Thursday to promote the VMY 2007 to encourage more people from Indonesia, especially northern Sumatra, to visit Malaysia.
He said more than 240 events and activities, comprising arts, sports, culture and festivities, would be held nationwide and they included the Mega Sales Carnival from June 16 to Sept 2 and the Malaysia International Aerospace Adventure where a space ship from Russia, known as Bhuran, would be on display.
