KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu government plans to set up a jewellery sales centre called “Gold House” here, soon.
State Local Government and Housing Committee Chairman Datuk Ahmad Said said the centre would be housed at the three-storey main post office building in Syahbandar here.
“The post office will be shifting to its own new premises in Bukit Besar soon.
“Hence, besides making it easier for people to buy jewellery, we also want the jewellery stores scattered all over now to be housed in one place,” he said.
Ahmad said the jewellery centre would offer a wide, exquisite range of jewellery for locals and tourists to choose from.
He said the centre would be equipped with various safety features including closed-circuit televisions and an alarm system to ensure the safety of traders and customers.
Currently, there are 20 to 25 jewellery outlets at the Payang main market and in Kampung Cina, and these traders will be relocated to the Gold House.
“We want the jewellery centre to be a tourist attraction for Terengganu,” said Ahmad.
On another development, he said the RM10mil bazaar building in front of the Payang market was almost ready, and would be handed over to the state government by the contractor next month.
“Some of the traders at the Payang market will be moved temporarily to the bazaar to make way for renovation work at the market for more conducive trading and shopping.
“The renovation will be done in stages so as not to disrupt business at the market,” he added.
