Hotel occupancy rates up in Johor

JOHOR BARU: If the occupancy rate for the first two months of this year is a sign of things to come, hoteliers in the state can look forward to good times.

State tourism and environment committee chairman Freddie Long said that the hotel occupancy rate in Johor averaged 70% in the first two months of this year, compared with 48% last year.

“With this being Visit Malaysia 2007, I hope the hotel occupancy rate will continue to rise,” he said.

Long said visitors to the state had increased to 15.7mil last year from 12.3mil in 2005.

He said that the increase was due to factors like reasonable pricing of food and goods, and competitive hotel rates.

“Some 60,000 Singaporeans enter Johor daily despite the traffic jam and other inconveniences. So we must have a very good pull factor,” he said at the Johor Baru Malaysian Red Crescent Society’s Chinese New Year gathering Sunday.
