Malaysia's Tourist Arrivals Exceed Target

KUALA LUMPUR - It was another record-breaking year for Malaysia as it registered 17.55 million visitor arrivals in 2006, slightly surpassing the target of 17.5 million.

This is an overall increase of 6.8 percent compared to 2005's arrivals of 16.43 million.

Total tourist receipts for 2006 were RM36.2 billion (US$10.3 billion), an increase of 13 percent compared to 2005. This is, however, RM1.4 billion less than the targeted figure of RM37.6 billion.

ASEAN remains the most lucrative market with Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei supplying 77.22 percent of the total figure.
