UNSCRUPULOUS taxi drivers who fleece foreign tourists, especially during Visit Malaysia 2007, have affected the tourism industry in the country, Tamil Nesan reported.
Quoting a survey by Bernama in the Klang Valley, the paper said that most foreign tourists rely on taxis and some drivers use this opportunity to overcharge the visitors.
Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association secretary-general Datuk Dr Maamor Osman suggested that the authorities check on taxi drivers and weed out those who are cited for complaints for over-charging and not going by the meter.
He said the authorities need to step up enforcement.
However, according to the survey, many tourists agree that there are also taxi drivers who were friendly, conversant in English and used the meter.
