Happy Ending for Elderly Couple after losing RM20K to Excellence Travel

After the heart-wrenching experience of losing RM20,000 that was meant for their first trip to Europe, G.C. De Witt and his wife will finally get to go on their tour, courtesy of the Mayflower Travel Group.

The travel group has decided to sponsor a tour to Italy for De Witt, 71, and his wife, 62, who were unable to travel due to Excellence Holiday Sdn Bhd going bust earlier this month.

The couple had saved for 10 years for a trip to Europe that was cancelled at the eleventh hour when their tour leader told them the company was bankrupt.

De Witt was thrilled that he and his wife were given back this opportunity of a lifetime.

“This is more than we could have ever asked for,” he said at the Mayflower office here yesterday. “We want to thank Mayflower for being kind and caring by giving us this generous tour after hearing about our situation.”

The De Witts will be going on a fully guided eight-day tour of Italy. The trip is valued at about RM8,000 per person and they have tentatively booked to leave on Merdeka day.

Mayflower Travel Group general manager Chin Ten Hoy said: ”We were touched by their plight. So we thought the least we could do to restore their confidence in travel agents was to give them this trip.”

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said Matta should take responsibility for the episode because if they failed to do so, the next Matta fair might be affected.

He said people might not have confidence in agents as travellers have to pay in advance when they buy a tour package at the fair.

“Therefore Matta must scrutinise their agents and tour operators and also airline agents before allowing them to participate in the fair,” he told reporters after launching Hotel Istana's re-introduction ceremony here last night.
