Floral fest will be at new Quarry Recreational Park

THE Quarry Recreational Park, a newly developed area at the Penang Botanic Gardens, is the venue of this year’s Penang International Floral Festival from May 27 to June 3.

It is the first time the event will be held at the 4ha park which was formerly the site of a quarry operated by the Penang Develop-ment Corporation beside the jeep track up Penang Hill.

“We are using the festival to promote the park as not many people know of its existence. The park was completed late last year at a cost of RM1.2mil. Its facilities include a jogging path, a children’s playground and space for recreational activities such as family days,” said gardens director Lim Boon Tiong.

Penang Tourism Development and Environment Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow said yesterday among the highlights would be the Orchid and Adenium shows.

He said some 600 orchids and 300 adeniums were expected to be showcased by collectors at the two shows.

He said the Corporate Garden Competition would be making its debut. The Landscape Design Competition is open to factories from the free industrial zone, government agencies and private companies which would vie for the Governor’s Challenge Trophy.

Each participating organisation will be provided a lot measuring between 18.58 sq metres (200 sq feet) and 37.16 sq metres (400 sq feet).

Teng said there would also be a Nature Education Outreach where activities highlighting the diversity of flora and fauna in the tropical rainforest and the many uses of plants in our daily lives would be lined up.

The festival will also feature a Floral Enclave Exhibition where colourful plants and flowers will be displayed and a Floral Art Exhibition featuring creative floral arrangements.

“For those who want to take something home, there will be decorative plants and landscape products for sale at the Garden Expo,” Teng told a press conference at Komtar.

He said the festival, themed Penang In Bloom, was expected to attract 200,000 local and foreign visitors.

“The opening hours is 9am to 8pm daily. Admission is free. Come join us for some fun in the sun,” he added.

All activities will be held at the Quarry Recreation Park except for the Floral Enclave Exhibition (at the Formal Garden), Nature Education Outreach (outside Coronation Camp) and Garden Expo (former govern-ment quarters behind the stalls near the garden’s entrance).
