KUALA LUMPUR: A hotel supervisor was on her rounds when she noticed a black bundle on the floor. She was shocked when the bundle moved. Alarmed, she called her colleague and on opening the bundle, they found an infant wrapped in a jacket.
The incident occurred on the first floor of the Katari Hotel in Jalan Pudu on Sunday evening. The baby boy, weighing 2.5kg, is believed to be two days old. It is learnt that police are now studying the tapes from the hotel’s closed- circuit television cameras on the ground floor to ascertain the identity of the person who abandoned the baby.
A source said that about 8pm, a woman in her early 20s was seen rushing into the hotel carrying a big black bag. Several minutes later, the same person was seen leaving in a hurry.
Hotel staff also told police that the woman’s behaviour was suspicious. She seemed agitated and nervous when she came into the hotel. It is believed that she may have been carrying the baby in the bag. The baby was found between the lift and the staircase on the first floor.
Images lifted from the CCTV showed the woman wearing a black head scarf, T-shirt and jeans.It is learnt police are now putting together a photo-fit of the woman.
The baby was sent to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital’s maternity ward for medical checks. It is learnt that the baby will be handed to the Social Welfare Department today.
Dang Wangi police chief ACP Mohamad Zulkarnain Abdul Rahman confirmed the incident and said efforts were under way to locate the girl.Those with information on the woman can contact Inspector Zamilah Mamat at 03 20702222.
