International spa experts to converge in Malaysia

Star Exclusive: For the first time in Malaysia, 17 internationally renowned spa experts will converge at the Asia Spa and Wellness Festival 2006, marking a new chapter for the spa and wellness industry in Malaysia.

If names like Dagmar Rizatto, Suzanne Ng and Toni Mehmann ring a bell, you probably know that these are some of the top names in the spa and wellness industry. And for the first time, they will be joining 14 others to speak at the Asia Spa and Wellness Festival 2006 (ASWF2006).
The Festival will be officiated by Tourism Minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, who will also deliver a keynote address on the spa industry.

Melinda Yon Ina Bauermeister, Project Manager for ASWF2006 said that this will be the learning and networking event of the year for the Malaysia spa and wellness industry, and is a must-attend for spa operators and managers, hoteliers, travel agents, and any professional with an interest in the spa and wellness industry.

She said, “A recent study indicated that spa and wellness industry globally has exceeded the USD 20 billion in revenue, and employs in excess of 400,000 people. In the United States, spa is already the fourth largest leisure industry, and has overtaken theme parks, casinos and cruise”
“The social and economic impact of the industry, which is growing at an average of 12% to 18% annually, cannot be ignored. If you run a hotel, a shopping mall, a hospital or even a cafĂ©, it is time to start thinking how you can benefit from this industry”

Melinda Yon, who runs Hong Kong-based 360O Spa Solutions, concurs, and said, “Malaysia with its strong heritage of traditional therapies and natural wellness is ideally positioned to be the next spa destination. What is needed is the operational know-how to raise the standards locally to international-level. When that happens, Malaysia will be hard to beat”
