Sarawak to draw 2,500 delegates for 11 Major Conventions

Sarawak bids to capture bigger share of convention business

KUCHING: Sarawak expects to draw some 2,500 delegates for the 11 major conventions it will host during Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2007.
State Tourism and Urban Development Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh said these conventions included a regional conference on biodiversity in tropical planted forests.

“The 2,500 delegates are expected to generate an estimated 10,000 room nights and spend about RM6.8mil,” he added when replying to points raised by members during debate on the 2007 state Budget.

Wong said the newly set up Sarawak Convention Bureau, the first of its kind in the country, was going all out to capture a bigger market share of the global convention and meeting business.

“Its free services for meeting planners are currently being promoted as part of an RM260,000 local media and public relations campaign to encourage more Malaysian organisations to consider bidding to host national or international meetings in Sarawak.”

He said there were some 14,000 different international association meetings organised around the world every year, 49% of which rotated worldwide, with 9% in the Asia-Pacific region.
He said that more than 8,000 international meetings could be held in Malaysia, but the country only hosted 52 or less than 1% last year.

Wong said with the multi-million ringgit Sarawak Convention and Exhibition Centre due to open here in three years’ time, the state would be better positioned to compete for target meetings.
He said the Sarawak Tourism Board had lined up 60 key events for VMY 2007, and that the World Rainforest Music Festival, Gawai and Sarawak Regatta had been listed in the country’s main tourism calendar.

State Assistant Minister for Tourism Hamden Ahmad yesterday launched the VMY 2007 “Spot the car sticker contest” campaign at Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg here.
