Langkawi keen on Middle East market

TOURISM Langkawi is pulling all stops to attract more Middle Eastern tourists to the island and is targeting a 12 per cent increase over last year's arrivals.

Its corporate services manager, Ms Suziana Othman, said: "There are more brochures and signages in Arabic this year. Two new Middle Eastern restaurants have also opened this year. Some local restaurants in the island also incorporate a few Middle Eastern dishes in their menus."

Tourism Langkawi has been organising Arabic basic language courses for front-liners for the past five years and have trained some 700 people to date.

Travel agents are seeing an increase in demand from Middle Eastern tourists to Langkawi over last year.

Destination of the World, general manager, Mr Jogy John, said he has seen a 20 per cent increase of Middle Eastern tourists to Langkawi and a 15 per cent increase to Penang due to aggressive marketing.

Sala Travel & Tours managing director, Mr Pishol Ishak, has also seen a 10 per cent increase of Middle Eastern visitors to Langkawi compared to last year.

Four-star hotel, The Frangipani Langkawi Resort & Spa, is experiencing 90 per cent occupancy. The majority are Middle Eastern tourists, said its general manager, Mr Egon M Lassmann. He added the hotel has seen a significant increase of Middle Eastern tourists over last year.
