All Aircraft Passengers From Japan Screened For Radiation Level At KLIA
He said the inspection on passengers travelling on MAS, AirAsia and Japan Airlines had started since March 16 at the KL International Airport and March 18 at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) which involved the low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT).
"Those found to have been exposed to radioactive elements would undergo a decontamination process by an accredited agency, that is the nuclear and atomic power licensing agency, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment with assistance from the security division of Malaysia Airports Berhad," he said after launching the Caring Society Programme (Mayang) at the Community Hall in Pintas, near here today.

MAS flyers can buy train tickets online
Malaysia Airlines (MAS) passengers can now purchase KL International Airport (KLIA) Ekspres train tickets via online, through the national carrier and MASholiday websites at malaysiaairlines.com and holiday.malaysiaairlines.com.
MAS senior general manager (Commercial Strategy) Dr Amin Khan said via the service which was available since August 23, customers only needed to follow three simple steps -- purchase, print and scan.
"Passengers can now avoid the rush and long queues at the KLIA check-in counters by simply checking in and collecting their boarding pass at the KL Sentral.
"All they have to do is purchase the train ticket through the website, print it from their email and scan the ticket at the gate before taking the train," he said in a statement today.

KLIA’s new terminal will serve as economic stimulus
The Prime Minister said he expects KLIA2 to boost tourism revenue to RM168 billion by 2020.
“The construction of a project such as this new terminal brings the country many benefits. Not only will it serve as an economic stimulus by providing job opportunities to the people of Malaysia, it will also boost tourism by attracting more airlines and visitors into the country.
“This facility will greatly enhance our vision to increase tourism revenue from the current RM53 billion in 2009 to RM168 billion by 2020,” he said during his speech at the ground breaking ceremony for KLIA2.
He said that local businesses would also benefit from the greater influx of tourists into the country.
“The spill-over effects of having this captive market at our airports is immense, from a commercial perspective, following the footsteps of the established successful airports such as Heathrow London and Schiphol Amersterdam where the airports are much more than just a place to catch flights.
“Malaysia Airports has envisioned our own airports as the platform to drive commercial business. With its vision to be a world-class airport business, I am encouraged to know that besides operating top notch airport facilities and services, there will also be ample retail and commerce opportunities that will allow Malaysian businesses to capitalise and benefit from the influx of tourists and spending power flowing continuously through the arrival and departure gates,” he said.
The targeted completion date for the new LCCT, estimated to cost RM2 billion, is April 2012 based on a 20-month construction period.
The LCCT will be able to cater for 30 million passengers per annum, with potential to expand to 45 million.
A new four kilometre long runway will also be built for the LCCT.
To be known as KLIA2, it is located only two kilometre from the main KLIA terminal.
Najib also noted that AirAsia was the driving force behind low-cost travel growth in the region.
“Over the last 10 years low-cost travel at KLIA has grown on an average of 37 per cent per annum. The double-digit growth is expected to continue for the next five to ten years despite intense competition from other large airports in the region.
“I have to compliment AirAsia for their innovative efforts to stimulate low-cost travel in the country and I applaud Malaysia Airport’s role in supporting the growth of this burgeoning travel segment. Malaysia Airports has anticipated that KLIA as whole would handle over 60 million passengers by 2020 and close to 45 per cent of these passengers are likely to be low-cost travellers,” he said.
Early last year, there was a much publicised tussle between Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), the operator of most of Malaysia’s airports, and Air Asia, the region’s leading low-cost carrier, to build the new LCCT.
That was just after Air Asia announced its intentions to build its own terminal and runway in Labu, Negeri Sembilan to cope with soaring passenger volume and alleged that MAHB would not be able to build an LCCT to suit its needs and ambitions.
Malaysia Airports on the other hand, said that the new LCCT should be built according to its masterplan for KLIA.
The Labu proposal was initially given the green light on January 5th by the government, but it reversed its decision about three weeks later after a public outcry erupted as it was seen as building another airport just a few kilometres away from KLIA and thus duplicating resources.
Najib stressed that KLIA2 was designed with consideration for AirAsia’s requirements.
“I am glad to note that while this new terminal is designed with great consideration for the requirements of the region’s largest low-cost carrier, AirAsia, it will be accessible to all airlines upon completion. With the thriving low cost travel in the region, the new terminal is poised to serve as a hub and attract more low cost carriers to fly to Kuala Lumpur,” he said.
The first phase of the project was awarded to Malaysian infrastructure firm, WCT. The RM363 million contract is for the earthworks and drainage job for the LCCT.
However, MAHB has admitted that the completion of the earthworks for the runaway is behind schedule.
MAHB will also build a multi-modal transportation hub for buses, taxis, and ERL to provide connectivity for not only passengers but also for the public to move from one part of the country to another.
According to the National Airport Masterplan (NAMP), there is room for two additional terminals near the LCCT.
The masterplan was drawn up by Netherlands Airport Consultants BV and KLIA Consultancy Services.

KL Sightseeing Tours For Transit Passengers
Launching the package dubbed "Showcase KL" here Friday, Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said the package included a KLIA Express train journey and a "KL Hop On Hop Off" bus tour of the capital.
He said up to 43 tourist spots were included in the "Showcase KL" organised by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) with the cooperation of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the Immigration Department, KLIA Express, KL Hop On Hop Off, Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Airlines (MAS).
"This is not a group package that required airline passengers to travel in groups. They can get down at any KL Hop On Hop Off bus stops to have a closer look at tourist spots of their choice," he told reporters after launching the package.
IF 20 per cent of transit passengers at the KL International Airport (KLIA) buy the package, it would contribute RM650,000 to the economy, he said, adding that he expected about 10,000 transit passengers would buy the package this year.
The package is sold at the Visit KL Counter at the KLIA satellite building between 6am and 10pm daily, including on public holidays.
The package cost RM95 for 18-year-old and above, RM84 (seven to 12-year-old), RM46 (five to 11-year-old), RM28 (below four years) and free of charge (below one-year-old).
Transit passengers taking the package will undergo Immigration screening before leaving KLIA and upon rejoining their flight.
"They will get free drinks and enjoy discounts at places like Aquaria KLCC, National Museum, KL Towers and Bird Park. As Tourist Reward card members, they are entitled to a discount of between 10 and 20 per cent at KL Pavilion," said Raja Nong Chik.
Earlier, the first batch of 35 Malaysia Airlines transit passengers were received by Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Ismail, MAHB managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad, Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general Azizan Nordin and KLIA Express chief executive officer Normah Mohd Noor and KLIA Immigration chief Rohaizi Bahari.

New LCCT works to start soon
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the country's biggest airport operator, hopes to start earthworks next month on the new permanent low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in Sepang, its chairman Tan Sri Dr Aris Othman said.
Aris said it was crucial that works begin next month for MAHB to complete the LCCT by the third quarter of 2011.
"We are sticking to our 2011 deadline," he told reporters after the graduation ceremony for 194 airport security staff at the Bunga Raya Complex in Sepang yesterday.
In March, MAHB said it would complete the new terminal and a new runway within two and a half years, without exceeding the estimated cost of RM2 billion.
The permanent LCCT will be located to the west of the main KLIA terminal building, roughly 1.5km in distance.
The new terminal building will be 150,000 sq m and hold up to 30 million passengers a year, with capacity for expansion of up to 45 million passengers.
MAHB is also planning substantial investments to beef up its retail shopping and services division to boost revenue.
In the financial year ended December 31 2008, its retail and food and beverage division posted RM304.9 million sales, or about a fifth of the group's revenue of RM1.51 billion.
Aris said MAHB will focus on renovations to the main terminal building of the airport to enhance the retail facilities located there.
"We realise we cannot rely on airport charges alone as these tend to remain stagnant or low due to the competitiveness of many airports around the world."

Negeri Sembilan To Attract Transit Passengers
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the figure was massive and should be exploited by the local tourism sector.
"I consider the current figure to be massive because some passengers had to wait between 12 and 24 hours. However, it needs the coordination of the various departments to be successful," he told reporters after attending the launch of the Malaysia Holidays Fair by Tourism Minister Datuk seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, here on Sunday.
He said that in the past, the number of transit passengers who came to the state was very small and it was made on the initiative of the local hotels.
If it were well coordinated, the state, especially the resort areas which had many hotels such as Port Dickson, would see a big jump in tourist arrivals.
Meanwhile, Dr Ng said the study on the entry of transit passengers to Negeri Sembilan would be discussed by a special committee that would be set up.
She said it was a major move and the responsibility should not be placed on the ministry alone.
"For this purpose, we will choose Negeri Sembilan, especially the areas around Port Dickson, as the first state to implement the programme as it is located near KLIA," she added.

Making it easy to get to the LCCT via KLIA Ekspress
FROM Sept 15, travellers heading to the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) can to choose to take the KLIA Transit train to the terminal.
Passengers can board the KLIA Transit train from KL Sentral, Bandar Tasik Selatan or Putrajaya and Cyberjaya to the Salak Tinggi station where they will be ferried directly to the LCCT on a dedicated air-conditioned shuttle coach.
A porter will also be on hand to help with luggage at the Salak Tinggi station at no extra charge.
ERL CEO Noormah Mohd Noor said the service was not meant to compete with bus services to LCCT but to provide an alternative for passengers.

“It is the right time for us to come up with this service as LCCT passengers are more mature in their selection. There is a demand for better, safer, and more comfortable modes of travel and passengers are willing to pay for that,” she said at the service launch in Salak Tinggi KLIA Transit station recently.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri was also present at the event.
Noormah added that travelling via KLIA Transit also contributed to the reduction of car trips to LCCT, translating into significant savings on carbon emission.
With 73 trips from KL Sentral and LCCT, Noormah said ERL was expecting a 10% increase from its total daily passengers of 7,000.
A one-way ticket from KL Sentral to the LCCT costs RM12.50 (adult) and RM6 (child) while two-way tickets cost RM22 (adult) and RM11 (child). Shuttle bus services are free during the promotion period.
From Bandar Tasik Selatan station to the LCCT, tickets are priced at RM8.30 (adult) and RM4 (child). The shuttle bus service is charged at RM2.50 per person.
From Putrajaya and Cyberjaya station, tickets are priced at RM3 (adult) and RM1.50 (child) while shuttle bus services are also at RM2.50 per person.
In conjunction with the launch, ERL will be giving away 5,000 free tickets for the new service (applicable only from KL Sentral to Salak Tinggi station). The free tickets are valid for travel effective from Oct 1.

Plan for 2km tracks from KLIA to new low-cost terminal
ERLSB, majority controlled by YTL Corp Bhd, holds a 30-year concession to operate the KLIA Express and KLIA Transit rail services from KL Sentral in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, to KLIA.
Chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor said the extension of its rail services to the new permanent LCCT will boost passenger traffic by some 15 per cent to 4.2 million from 2011.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the main contractor for the new permanent LCCT, is targeting to complete the construction by the third quarter of 2011 at a cost of RM2 billion.
ERLSB has 12 electric high-speed train sets for the KLIA Express, which runs from KL Sentral to KLIA in 28 minutes, and KLIA Transit, which stops at Bandar Tasek Selatan, Putrajaya and Salak Tinggi before heading to the airport in 35 minutes.
The KLIA Express and KLIA Transit carry a combine 3.7 million passengers a year currently.
The new LCCT terminal, which will be located to the west of the main KLIA terminal building with a distance of 1.5km, will be able to accommodate 30 million passengers per annum, with capacity for expansion of up to 45 million passengers a year.
Noormah said the company will launch on September 15 a temporary bus shuttle service from Salak Tinggi to the existing LCCT to promote its KLIA Transit service, while the new permanent LCCT is under construction.
"We are doing this to capture the LCCT market, which will be a new growth area for us," she said.
Noormah also said that ERLSB is offering VIP services, group discounts and giving one complimentary trip for every 10 trips bought up front.
The company has tied up with Amadeus, the world's biggest processor of travel bookings with a 29.2 per cent market share, to help sell its KLIA Express tickets.

KLIA To Facilitate Seamless Connection Between Carriers, Terminals
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) announced this at the 15th World Route Development Forum that took place in Beijing from Sept 13 to 15, the company said in a statement Tuesday.
"Today's passengers are presented with numerous options from full service carriers, low cost carriers, various routings, prices and so on. The best option could be a combination of a full service carrier and low cost carrier.
"However, selecting the best combination of carriers, routing and price is not easy since there is no single portal for the passenger to use," said MAHB general manager (marketing) Sallauddin Mat Sah.
He said KLIA's Next Generation Hub would provide the passenger with "tools to plan an itinerary that best suit his or her needs, as well as the physical infrastructure to integrate and enable connections between full service and low cost carriers".
The airport operator said there was already a growing trend of passengers who self-connect between the Main Terminal Building and Low Cost Terminal at KLIA.
A study had revealed that there were at least 500 self-connect passengers per day or 1,000 passenger movements, representing an annual market of over 180,000 passengers, it added.
It said KLIA was well positioned as a Next Generation Hub as the airport offered both the largest volume of routes and traffic carried out by low cost carriers, making it a market leader in the sector in the Asia Pacific Region and globally.
"By capitalising on the trends and developments within the airline industry and consumer environment such as the rise of internet bookings and the era of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, MAHB is seizing the opportunity to create and shape a world first Next Generation Hub at KLIA and foresees that the number of connecting passengers between the two terminals could grow significantly in the next few years," Sallauddin said.
At Beijing forum, MAHB also launched www.flyklia.
"The portal is free to use and search results include links to airlines and travel agent websites where travellers can book flights directly.
"This portal will continue to be extensively enhanced over the coming months and MAHB is also looking at adding other initiatives such as an airport loyalty scheme for frequent flyers," Sallauddin said.

Glass barriers at KLIA - a match for touts
![]() |
ANTI-TOUT: Glass barricade in KLIA stops touts from approaching arriving passengers |
And this has been achieved even before the approved counters for taxis, limousines, travel agencies and hotels have been effectively relocated inside the arrival hall — another step in the plan initiated by Malaysia Airports Bhd (MAB), besides erecting the glass barricades.
“We don’t have any figure on how much touting activities have dropped, but after the glass barriers had been put in place, the touting activities in the terminal have dropped significantly,” Daud told Malay Mail.
“I would hazard a guess that touting activities have gone down by 50 per cent,” he said, adding that the relocation of the counters — 18 in total — is expected to be done after Hari Raya.
“Right now, enforcement officers from various agencies — airport security, police and the Road Transport Department — are deployed all round the terminal to keep a close lookout for touts. Once the relocation is completed, I think we will see even less touting at KLIA,” added Daud.
The glass barricades, measuring 2.5m high, effectively stop touts from approaching arriving passengers. The area within the barricades is also heavily guarded by security and police officers, making life more difficult for touts.
Although passengers still remain exposed to potential touts after passing the barricades, the relocation of the counters is expected to help solve this problem.
The idea is to ensure passengers are provided with transport options before leaving the arrival hall, hence closing them to any offers by approaching touts. The plan was announced in May by MAB to solve its long-time tout woes.
On May 14, Malay Mail highlighted how a travel company, Fleet Holidays Sdn Bhd, had its customers conned by touts pretending to be its agents.
The customers — a couple — were approached by a tout upon arriving at KLIA, and were told by the tout that he was a replacement driver.
After taking the couple to their hotel in the city centre, the “replacement driver” demanded a hefty RM690 from them for the transport, telling them they could get the amount reimbursed by the travel agent.

More choices for travellers
Yesterday, KL International Airport (KLIA) and Malaysia Airports Bhd (MAB) launched the first phase of the Next Generation Hub, a web portal called www.flyklia.
Through this web portal, travellers are able to choose the lowest fare and the quickest route to a destination.
“We may not be the first to offer such services to travellers but we are the most updated,” said MAB managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad.
He added that this portal also serves to facilitate people to use Kuala Lumpur as a transit point. In the past, such information was possible but required much more work and hassle. With one website to find the connections, travellers can save time.
The flight planner on the portal, which is free, searches more than 660 airlines worldwide for the best flights and connections available. The search results include links to airlines and other travel portals where travellers can book flights directly.
“The portal empowers the traveller with tools to build unique itineraries. At a touch of a button, travellers may choose to arrive at their destination on full-service carriers and depart on a low-cost carrier. Such combinations would not show up on a regular booking engine.”
Moreover, the website is easy to navigate, said Bashir.
With the launch of the website, Malaysia Airports is also excited to introduce the new “KLIA Next Generation Hub — The new way to the world” branding to convey a new way of doing things for both passengers and airlines.
As for what phase two of the plan will be, Bashir said it will be announced when the time comes.

KLIA Enters First Phase As Next Generation Hub
As part of the programme, the KL International Airport (KLIA) is being positioned as a next generation hub, a premier airport that will enable passengers to connect seamlessly amongst all types of carriers including full service airlines and low-cost carriers to all destinations served from KLIA.
For a start, MAHB and KLIA launched the web portal www.flyklia.
"We want to come out with facilities that help the passengers to travel in our airport in a more comfortable manner," MAHB's managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad told reporters after the web portal launch here Tuesday.
"We hope people will make use of it. The aviation industry is changing. Ten years ago it was different. Today, passengers can actually choose their own itinerary, their own fares.
"Ten years from now, I'm sure the industry will change from what it is now and we are going to be ready for it,"
Currently, there are 54 airlines in KLIA featured in the website.
Asked whether the airport operator will add more airlines in the website, Bashir said they will be added as they come on board.
The itinerary builder was developed in partnership with an Iceland-based technology company which provides innovative technology solutions for the travel industry.
The Flight Planner, which is free to use, searches more than 660 airlines worldwide for the best flights and connections available.
The search results include links to airlines and other travel portals where travellers can book flights directly.
Besides flight booking options, the website also features information such as the operating airlines at KLIA, facilities available and environmental efforts at KLIA.
The portal would be continually enhanced and for the next phase of development, MAHB is already looking at including hotel booking engine which will compare prices for properties in and outside Malaysia.
MAHB also plans to add an Airport Frequent Connector Loyalty programme, which is aimed at rewarding the frequent travellers.
On news report regarding MAHB to announce a new set of financial incentives for airlines that fly out of the 39 airports it operates in the country, Bashir said discussions will be held with the airlines the next one or two weeks before an announcement is made.
"The incentives are actually to reward the airlines that bring business to the airport (KLIA)," Bashir said.

Shuttle buses from Subang SkyPark to KLIA, city soon
PASSENGERS on Firefly landing at the Subang SkyPark will soon be able to enjoy shuttle bus services into the city and Sepang.
FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd managing director Eddy Leong said following the positive response received from the community airline's bus collaboration with Rapid Penang since May, Firefly is looking at more value-for-money options for its passengers.
"We are in active arrangement with Subang Skypark to introduce shuttle bus services to KL Sentral and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport," he told Business Times.
Leong said Firefly's collaboration with Rapid Penang is based on cross-marketing.
"Passengers buying our tickets are informed on their booking itinerary that they are entitled to this special service and we also make announcements on board. This is especially good for Indonesian passengers who need not worry about 'negotiating' bus or taxi charges when they land in Penang," he added.
The Rapid shuttle bus service takes passengers to Weld Quay in George Town from the airport.
From its hubs in Subang and Penang, Firefly offers flights within Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.
Firefly is also considering developing a loyalty programme to reward its individual and corporate customers. "This is still at a very early stage and the idea is to offer something that is drastically different from other airlines."

LCCT-KL cab ride to cost more
The current fares are lower than fares from KL International Airport to the capital, although the terminal is further by 13km.
Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Abd Aziz said the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) would be reviewing the rates soon.
A budget taxi from the terminal to Kuala Lumpur costs RM61, but is RM67 from KLIA.
Nazri said the new fares would be based on distance.
“The licensing board will work on it to introduce a fair price,” said Nazri.
Board director Naimah Ramli said the taxi fares from the terminal were lower because it was a budget terminal.
Nazri, accompanied by deputy minister Datuk Liew Vui Keong, board chairman Datuk Markiman Kobiran and Naimah, visited the terminal and KLIA yesterday.
Nazri also announced that taxi permits for the terminal had been frozen until the demand for taxis there increased.
Currrently, there are 1,512 taxi drivers at the terminal.
“Taxi drivers complain they can hardly make three trips a day and this is insufficient for them to pay their instalments,” he said.
An action committee led by Nazri, comprising representatives from the CVLB, the Road Transport Department, police, taxi operators and taxi drivers association had been formed to meet every three months, he said.
Nazri also said he would be discussing with Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat on a proposal to set up roadblocks at the terminal and KLIA exits to check taxi touts.

15 MAS flight crew members grounded for a week
MAS director of operations Datuk Tajuden Abu Bakar said the 15 crew members on the plane were taken off the roster for a seven-day home quarantine as a precautionary measure.
The 21-year-old student flew on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH091 from Newark, New Jersey, to KLIA via Sweden.
“Malaysia Airlines confirms that Flight MH091 from Newark, arriving at KLIA on May 13 at 7.15am, was on transit at Arlanda, Stock-holm, where 80 passengers disembarked.
“From Arlanda, 199 people, including 184 passengers and 15 crew members, arrived in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.
He said the national carrier has since been in contact with Swedish authorities to provide them with the passenger list for monitoring purposes.
He said the ministry had also earlier advised passengers who disembarked from the flight in Kuala Lumpur to call the ministry at 03-8881-0200 or 03-8881-0300; or go to any hospital, clinic or health office for follow-up action.
MAS also clarified that none of its pilots were warded as reported yesterday.
