Subang airport-KTM Komuter link in the pipeline

Subang airport’s connectivity will be boosted with plans to link the terminal with the KTM Komuter service and shuttle buses.

KTM Komuter trains could start servicing Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport by next year, said Janardhanan Gopala Krishnan, chief operating officer of terminal operator Subang Skypark Sdn Bhd.

He added that the train stop would be located at Commercial Nexus, a proposed shopping mall across the road from the terminal, which is now an open-air car park.

“We have proposed to extend the KTM Komuter line (to the airport). There is already a spur line to the roundabout (on the way to the airport). Subject to approval, it should be ready in 15 to 18 months,” he told reporters recently.

Janardhanan said Skypark wanted to provide seamless transfer for passengers by improving connectivity to the airport.

He said shuttle buses connecting the terminal to the Kelana Jaya LRT station and KL Sentral should begin operating by the middle of the year.

“We are in talks with private operators. We are still speaking with RapidKL on (public) buses plying this area,” he said.

On the status of the RM150mil Commercial Nexus, he said they were finalising the concept design, and construction work was expected to start in the second half of this year.

He said the mall, with about 600,000 sq ft of retail space, would not only serve passengers but also the community in nearby areas such as Ara Damansara.

“We want to get away from the mindset that if you go to an airport, you are just sending or picking someone up,” he said.

Shuttle buses from Subang SkyPark to KLIA, city soon

PASSENGERS on Firefly landing at the Subang SkyPark will soon be able to enjoy shuttle bus services into the city and Sepang.

FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd managing director Eddy Leong said following the positive response received from the community airline's bus collaboration with Rapid Penang since May, Firefly is looking at more value-for-money options for its passengers.

"We are in active arrangement with Subang Skypark to introduce shuttle bus services to KL Sentral and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport," he told Business Times.

Leong said Firefly's collaboration with Rapid Penang is based on cross-marketing.

"Passengers buying our tickets are informed on their booking itinerary that they are entitled to this special service and we also make announcements on board. This is especially good for Indonesian passengers who need not worry about 'negotiating' bus or taxi charges when they land in Penang," he added.

The Rapid shuttle bus service takes passengers to Weld Quay in George Town from the airport.

From its hubs in Subang and Penang, Firefly offers flights within Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.

Firefly is also considering developing a loyalty programme to reward its individual and corporate customers. "This is still at a very early stage and the idea is to offer something that is drastically different from other airlines."

Firefly's Subang-Singapore flights from July 1

FIREFLY will start flying from Subang to Singapore from July 1, kicking it off with three flights a day.

The community airline plans to increase it to four flights a day, one to two weeks post the launch, Firefly head of marketing and communications Angelina Fernandez told reporters after welcoming media and tourism delegates from Thailand on the airline's inaugural flight from Subang to Phuket.

The delegation will participate in a full four day programme, which started yesterday, hosted by Tourism Selangor and Tourism Malaysia.

Angelina said the airline was also looking at flying to southern destinations in Thailand such as Krabi and Huahin.

"We are still doing our research on the route to gauge the level of demand for our services. Of course with the current economy situation we have to be prudent with our expansion plans," she said.

According to Tourism Malaysia director in Thailand Iskanda Mirza, some 110,000 Thais fly to Malaysia in a month.

"We are confident with the entry of a third airline, other than Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia, the numbers will increase," he said.

Firefly will bring the number of flights that service the Thai sector up to 42 flights a week from 35. Firefly will fly daily on the Subang-Phuket route.

Angelina said she is confident that the Subang-Phuket route will perform better than the Penang-Phuket route which it started in 2007 itself.

The Penang-Phuket route records an average load factor of 70 per cent.

"We are really targeting the expatriates in Phuket who do their visa runs. We hope that they will use the opportunity to renew their visas in Kuala Lumpur and also take the opportunity to visit other states in Malaysia," Angelina said.

She also announced that the airline now flies three times a day to Johor Baru from Subang.

Today will see the airline start its Subang-Batam route, at three times a week, while on May 15th, it will start four times a week flights to Padang in Indonesia.

Firefly is running an introductory price for Subang-Phuket flights from RM88 per way. The fares are available for booking for travel period from now till October 24 2009.

First KL Airshow In Subang Next Year To Attract 300 Participants

Almost 300 aviation and plane manufacturing companies will be participating in the first Kuala Lumpur Airshow 2009 (KLas 2009) to be held at the Asia Pacific Auction Centre (Apac) in Subang Airport from July 15th to 19th, next year.

Chief Executive Officer, World Aerospace Sdn Bhd, Nonee Ashirin Mohd Radzi said today that the exhibition was aimed at bringing in the latest people from the industry, products and technologies and to act as a melting pot for professionals and experts in the aviation industry.

"With the endorsement by the Ministry of Tourism, we will be focusing on commercial airlines and business jets in the show," she said.

The show will focus on general aviation, business and regional jets, Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO), airport technologies and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).

"With its strategic location, KLas 2009 is set to draw a larger participation of commercial aircraft and buyers internationally," she told reporters adding that World Aerospace was also the organiser for last year's Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) exhibition in the aviation division.

Nonee said it was timely to hold the airshow in Subang, being a more conducive place to have an exhibition of such nature.

"It is also timely as the VistaJet Skypark had been launched in Subang and LIMA has grown into a military show especially the maritime sector so there is a vacuum in the commercial sector for aerospace," she added.

She also said that the show will not only address the trade people but will also be opened to the public on the last two days.

People from the Klang Valley will be treated to airshows involving international aerobatic teams, she added.

Tony Fernandes on Access to Subang Airport

AirAsia Bhd should be given equal opportunity to operate from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Airport in Subang as part of its strategy to develop the low-cost carrier concept in Malaysia, said group chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes.

“We would rather use the Subang airport than to spend another RM1bil to RM2bil for a new terminal at KL International Airport,” he told reporters after the company's AGM yesterday.

AirAsia had been pushing for the right to operate from the airport for five years, he added.

Meanwhile FireFly, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines (MAS), has received the green light to operate from the Subang airport, which is under Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd.

“The airport has good accessibility to Kuala Lumpur and infrastructure facilities that would benefit our business,” Fernandes said.

He said the low-cost carrier terminal at KLIA lacked accessibility to the city centre and that AirAsia needed “a bigger terminal'' to accommodate its growing business.

On the flight frequency for its Singapore route, Fernandes said AirAsia “should not be held back” because it had the capacity to operate more than two daily flights if it was allowed.

He said the Government should support low-cost carriers because they enabled “tourists to fly at cheaper prices”, especially during the Visit Malaysia Year 2007.

He said the low-cost carrier concept would also help promote the country's medical, tourism and education industries due to cheaper fares.

“We are concerned that Tiger Airways is catching up with our business, so are Emirates and other foreign low-cost carriers which operate in Malaysia,” he said, adding that an unfair playing field would only harm AirAsia and FireFly, and directly benefit the foreign low-cost carriers.

“We are not afraid to compete provided we are given equal access,” he said.

On rising fuel prices, Fernandes said AirAsia planned to charge a small fee of RM2 for each additional bag a customer carried but had not decided when this would be implemented.

The group would continue to make profit as long as the crude oil price remained below US$75 per barrel, he said, adding that the airline would not extend its fuel hedge given that the price of US$100 per barrel was speculative.

He said the group would suffer an annual loss of US$3mil for every dollar increase in oil price.

Airasia Offers To Operate Subang Airport On Its Own

AirAsia Bhd is keen to operate and develop the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport at Subang via private financing initiative (PFI) and make it more business driven and competitive regionally.

AirAsia chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes said today the company was prepared to table a fresh proposal to the government seeking its permission to operate the airport.

When asked for his reaction should the government allow this, he said: "Definitely AirAsia will be prepared for that (to operate the Subang Airport via PFI).

"You have PFI roads, PFI power stations as well as many infrastructure projects, why not the airport," he told reporters after the company's annual general meeting here.

Personally, he said, it would be a good idea for the government to allow AirAsia to go into Subang Airport so that subsequently the no-frills airline would address on its own all matters related to the operation and infrastructure of the airport.

AirAsia had, among others, suggested that it too be allowed to operate via Subang just like community airline FireFly, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines.

Yesterday, Air Asia X chairman Datuk Seri Kalimullah Hassan was reported as saying that Malaysia needed a larger low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) soon to accommodate the increasing passenger volume if it wants to become the regional hub for low-cost travel.

Fernandes said the Subang PFI airport operations, apart from attracting more foreign investors to locate their businesses in Malaysia due to easier access to the Federal Capital, will also make it easier for foreigners to come here for medical, education and tourism reasons.

"Let's make Kuala Lumpur a relevant hub. If we are good and become a strong aviation player, there are so many aspects we can cater for, especially in the medical, tourism and education industries," he added.

"It is a fantastic cause-and-effect business. If we have our own airport close to town, it will attract more foreign investors and more visitors to Malaysia."

Fernandes also said that if AirAsia is allowed to operate Subang Airport, the LCCT at Sepang can be converted into a cargo terminal.

Asked on details of AirAsia's plans to impose a baggage charge on passengers to help cushion the impact of higher fuel prices, he said: "That's one of the ideas that I have. I'd rather look at things like that in a more democratic and fairer way. Maybe we will charge between RM1 and RM2 per extra bag.

"I do not know when to implement it, but what I can say is that it may be pretty soon, and I'm sure that once we implement it, MAS will follow us!"
