Regatta site to lure in more foreigners

Organisers of the Sarawak Regatta hope to attract more foreign participants to the event following the launch of its website.

State Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh said last year’s regatta saw teams from Dubai, Kalimantan, Brunei and Singapore taking part.

“We look forward to their participation this year and we hope that the website will be able to attract more participants from around the region,” he said when launching www.sarawakregatta.com at the state assembly building here recently.

He added that the website, hosted and sponsored by the Sarawak Tourism Board, would help promote the regatta worldwide.

“The site will be updated from year to year and will be linked to the board and Tourism Malaysia's websites and other websites of government bodies and agencies.”

The website features the history of the regatta, racing boats used by various communities in Sarawak, pictures and video clips of previous events, rules and registration forms.

The Sarawak Regatta is a major tourism event in the state and has also been picked as one of the 50 Visit Malaysia Year events.

This year’s race will take place from Aug 31 to Sept 2 on the Sarawak River here. Registration forms must be submitted by July 31 to the race secretariat at the Kuching Resident’s Office.
