The Visit Malaysia Year 2007 has failed to bring in more visitors to Sarawak.
State Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh said statistics for the first two months did not show any improvement in the number of visitors’ arrivals as compared to the same period last year.
“This is due to certain factors, like poor air connectivity and accessibility, which are beyond our control.
“We are working closely with the federal authority to rectify the situation,” he told Aidan Wing (BN – Lambir) during question time.
State Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Larry Sng Wei Shien said that out of the 637 state projects approved in two years (2006-2007), 245 with expenditures of over RM2bil had been completed.
For the federal projects in Sarawak, he said 47 out of the 839 projects approved during the same period had been completed.
“Both state and federal projects are monitored from the planning right up to the completion stage so that problems arising at any stage are quickly identified and resolved.
State Land Development Minister Datuk Dr James Masing said Sarawakians interested in venturing into commercial agriculture, like mini oil palm plantations, were encouraged to identify state land of economic size and apply as a group with relevant state agencies like the Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority and Land Custody Development Authority.
