Marriott plans 2 more hotels in Malaysia

Hotel management company Marriott International Inc, which operates the Marriott, Renaissance and Ritz Carlton, is scheduled to open two new hotels in Malaysia by the middle of next year, bringing the total number of hotels here to nine.

These two new openings, one in Johor and another in Sarawak, will see the group increase its room inventory in Malaysia by 400 from about 3,000 now.

Area vice-president for India, Malaysia, Maldives and Australia Rajeev Menon said that it will open a 300-room Renaissance in Bandar Baru Permas Jaya in the second quarter of next year.

The group also targets to open a 101-room Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa by mid-2012. This property, previously the Royal Mulu Resort, is located next to the Mulu National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site. It is now undergoing a complete makeover.

The seven operational hotels in Malaysia now are Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur, JW Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Renaissance Kota Baru in Kelantan, Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel, Renaissance Melaka Hotel, Miri Marriott Resort & Spa and its franchised property, Putrajaya Marriott Hotel.

Meanwhile, chief operating officer for Asia Pacific Craig S Smith said Malaysia is an important market for the group, especially since intra-Asian travel is big.

As more of its hotels open in India, China and the Middle East, more guests are familiar with the brand. Thus, loyalty helps to fill up hotel rooms in other countries too.

He added that its hotels in Malaysia will benefit from the growth in India, China and the Middle East.

The group, which experienced a tough 2009 for its Malaysian hotels, saw revenue per available room grow by a tenth in 2010 compared to the previous year.

"This year has started strong, (our) Kuala Lumpur hotels are doing well but it is too early to say how the situation in the Middle East will reflect in Malaysia this year," Rajeev said.

"We expect similar growth or partially more growth in 2011 compared to 2010," he added.

Hotel to promote Kuching as tourist and conference destination

PULLMAN Kuching will do its part to promote the state capital as a tourist and conference destination
“Kuching is a peaceful and interesting city with plenty of attractions to offer visitors,” says new general manager Eric Tan.
“We can help increase the tourism industry here in time to come. Part and parcel of my job will be to sell this destination and the hotel to the corporate and international markets,” he said at a cocktail reception and handover ceremony on Wednesday.
Over to you: Mini (left) offering best wishes to his successor Tan at a cocktail reception.
Tan, who took over from Fabrice Mini, said Pullman was working closely with the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) for this purpose.
“We’ll see how we can maximise our linkage to sell this location to visitors.”
He added that he would also continue to improve Pullman and present the hotel in a more strategic manner.
“We want to provide good value for our future clients in terms of services and the quality of our product.”
Tan joined Pullman Kuching six months ago after four years at Sofitel Vietnam. Both hotels are under the Accor Group.
Earlier, Mini thanked Pullman staff and tourism industry players for their support during his 20-month tenure.
“It’s been a challenging time but everything was possible because I believe in teamwork and recruiting the right people,” he said, adding that he hoped to visit Sarawak again in future.

Sabah, Sarawak To Lure 120,000 Singapore Tourists In 2010

Sabah and Sarawak which are aggressively marketing their tourism products abroad, hope to lure about 120,000 Singaporean tourists to the two Borneo states by this year.

The tourism boards of the two states joined hands Thursday with Tourism Malaysia in Singapore, led by its local director Zalizam Zakaria, in organising a seminar and travel mart for over 50 Singapore travel agents here.

About 20 travel agents and hoteliers from Sabah and Sarawak participated in the events promoting the nature and adventure attractions, which are in abundance, in the two states.

The Sabah delegation was led by the Sabah Tourism Board Assistant Marketing Manager Simon Jr Jalin and Sarawak, by the Sarawak Tourism Board Marketing Director, Benedict Jimbau.

Simon said Sabah hoped to increase its Singapore tourist arrivals to between 42,000 to 45,000 this year from the 40,000 recorded last year, by luring them to its fascinating Mount Kinabalu, forest and nature reserves as well as sea and diving spots.

Benedict said Sarawak was targeting 76,000 Singaporeans to visit the state this year, especially to its nature products such as the Mulu National Park, the Pandaw Cruise along the Rejang river and its international events, the annual Rainforest World Music Festival in Kuching and Jazz Festival in Miri.

Last year, the state registered over 50,000 tourist arrivals from Singapore, making the city-state fourth, among top-five tourist generating markets for Sarawak after Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Benedict said the Sarawak Tourism Board, now operating in a more business-like manner rather than as a government agency before, has been going all out to promote the state tourism industry abroad, especially in the international travel marts.

Fifth Jazz Fest Eyes RM10 Million In Tourism Revenue

The Fifth Miri International Jazz Festival (MIJF), which will be held here on May 14 and 15, is expected to generate RM10 million in tourism revenue, said Sarawak Tourism and Heritage Minister, Tan Sri Dr George Chan.

He said that since Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), the MIJF organiser, had set a higher target of 10,000 crowd turnout, it would likely generate greater income.

"Last year the festival managed to reap in about RM6 million in revenue.

"The tourists will definitely stay for two to three days, at least.

"They will be spending their money in the hotels, the food outlets and others who provide services for tourists," he said at a press conference organised by STB here on Saturday.

Dr Chan, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister, said he was confident STB would achieve the target despite the current sales of tickets of just above 2,000.

Eight international bands will be featured in this year's festival, comprising James Cotton Blues Band from US, Amina Figarova Sextet (Holland), Ricardo Herz (Brazil), Mellow Motif (Thailand), Michael Shrieve's Spellbinder (US), SimakDialog (Indonesia), Norbert Susemihl's New Orleans All Stars (Denmark/Germany/US) and Jeremy Tordjman (Switzerland).

Meanwhile, STB chief executive officer, Datuk Rashid Khan, said they had been conducting aggressive sales of tickets for the past few months particularly among the expatriates in the state, Brunei and Sabah.

He said these expatriates were among the majority who had been enquiring about the jazz festival and their numbers were significant.

Aiming to be the king of hoteliers

THE Kingwood Group has undergone tremendous growth in the last 20 years.

From the humble beginning of owning and running small family-style hotels in Miri, the group will soon become Sarawak’s largest privately-owned and managed hotel chain.

Comfortable and affordable: A guest room at Kingwood Resort, Mukah

In the late 1980s, Datuk Hii Yu Peng and his son King Chiong decided to diversify into the tourism industry from their core timber and construction business.

The decision led to the establishment of Rinwood Inn in Miri. The 49-room hotel has since changed its name to Kingwood Inn in line with the group’s brand.

After that, the father-and-son team has never looked back.

Unique: The lobby of Kingwood Resort, Mukah.

They have successfully expanded their hotel chain to Sibu, Kuching and Mukah. And each time, they built bigger hotels with better and more comfortable facilities for their guests.

“With the completion of the extension to Kingwood Hotel in Sibu in 15 months, our chain will have more than 700 rooms, making us the largest locally-owned and managed hotel chain in Sarawak,” Kingwood Group chief executive officer King Chiong told StarMetro in Sibu recently.

From Miri, the group set up its flagship hotel – the 168-room Kingwood Hotel in Sibu – which commenced business in 1993.

Luxurious: The Riverfront Cafe at Kingwood Hotel, Sibu.

Located on the bank of the Rajang River adjacent to the Rajang Esplanade, the hotel is now undergoing a major extension which will see an additional 250 rooms when it is completed in June 2011.

Work on the RM140mil extension is on schedule and more than 50% completed. The six-storey podium of the 18-storey new extension will be completed before October to cater for international conferences, accommodating more than 2,000 people.

Apart from being the largest hotel in Sarawak with 418 rooms, it will have the columnless Kingwood Ballroom which will seat 2,500 people and be the largest ballroom in the state.

Other new and outstanding features of the hotel are a multi-purpose hall that can accommodate 1,500 people, a four-storey car park with about 300 parking bays, a 929sqm supermarket on the ground floor and an esplanade fronting the hotel complex.

Impressive: Kingwood Resort in Mukah.

Twelve escalators and two lifts will be installed to serve guests and customers from the ground floor to the 5th floor of the podium. The new and old wings will be connected by sky bridges on the 7th and 9th floors while on the ground floor the two wings will be connected by a spacious common lobby.

King Chiong said the decision made 25 years ago to venture into the hospitality industry was the right move as the industry was growing at an encouraging pace in the state.

Sarawak, he added, was endowed with many natural tourism products and was also culturally rich.

“The trend in the last two decades have been on eco and cultural tourism and Sarawak is lucky that it has both products and the state is fully backing the development of tourism along these lines,” King Chiong noted.

In line with the state’s aggressive move into the tourism industry, the Kingwood Group spearheads its own expansion in the hospitality industry.

Its other hotel properties are in Kuching and Mukah.

In Kuching, Kingwood Inn at Jalan Padungan has 90 rooms. It was opened for business in May, 1991.

With the elevation of Mukah as a division in 2002, the Kingwood Group pioneered the development of two international-class hotels in Mukah.

Additions: Extension work in progress at the Kingwood Hotel, Sibu.

One is the 99-room Kingwood Resort and the other is the 200-room Kingwood Hotel.

The Kingwood Resort, located on a beach fronting the South China Sea 12km from Mukah Town, was opened in December 2005 while the 3-star Kingwood Hotel located in the town centre opened its doors for business in July 2008. It mainly serves business and corporate clients.

King Chiong said that Kingwood Resort had won a national and two international awards. It won the Malaysian Tourism Award for Excellence in Hotel Services in the 4-star category in 2006.

The international awards won were the Global Quality Management-New Millennium Award accorded by Trade Leader’s Club in Madrid, Spain, on January 28 last year and the Golden Award for Quality and Business Prestige given by Otherways Management and Consulting Association in Berlin, Germany, on March 30 last year. Since 1983, only eight resorts or hotels in Malaysia have won this award.

“These awards came as a surprise but they really help boost the image of our group and our resort in particular,” King Chiong said.

With the Sarawak Corridor Of Renewable Energy regional headquarters being located in Mukah, Kingwood Resort and Hotel in Mukah will certainly stand to benefit from the large influx of businessmen and professionals in the next decade.

Plans are on the drawing board to build more facilities at Kingwood Resort. These include several chalets, a spa and an international-class 18-hole golf course

On manpower, King Chiong said that most of the employees were locals with more than 70% of them bumiputra.

He said it was the group’s policy to give employment priority to the local people regardless of race and religion.

The five hotels under the group employ 315 personnel.

The Kingwood Group also runs a travel agency in Kuching and Sibu where it provides services such as airline ticketing and hotel accommodation for in-bound and out-bound tours.

Tourist Arrivals In Sarawak To Drop 5-10 Percent This Year

Tourist arrivals in Sarawak are expected to drop between five and 10 percent due to the Influenza A (H1N1) virus and the global economic downturn, state Urban Development and Tourism Minister, Datuk Michael Manyin, said on Tuesday.

He said the state tourism players were bracing for a drop in tourist arrivals as most countries now were amid global travel slowdown.

"The worldwide recession and fears of the flu will definitely affect the state's tourism industry. If the situation continues, tourist arrivals in the state will drop between five to ten percent.

"We hope the Influenza A (H1N1) situation will improve and the economy situation recovers soon so we can pick up by the end of this year," he told reporters at a news conference here today.

Manyin said Sarawak targeted 3.4 million tourist arrivals this year.

"I doubt we can achieve it if the situation persist," he said.

Earlier, Manyin said the 18th Kobe Osaka International (KOI) Karate World Cup will be held here beginning July 23-26 at the Sarawak Indoor Stadium, Petra Jaya.

He said about 2,000 exponents from 35 countries including, Scotland, Italy, Greece, India, Egypt, Holland, Russia, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Australia were scheduled to compete in more than 30 categories (aged eight to 45 and above).

Malaysia will be represented by the national team and clubs from Pahang, Labuan, Sabah and Sarawak.

Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek will declare open the event on Thursday.

Rainforest fest a huge success, but needs improvement

Requests for raincoats and a stage which was “camera-friendly” were among the feedback received on the just concluded Rainforest World Music Festival.

Sarawak State Urban Develop-ment and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin said the request for raincoats was from foreign visitors because of the rainy weather which affected the first night of the festival last weekend.

There were also comments that the festival’s new stage was not camera-friendly as it was too high, making it difficult for photographers to take pictures.

He said a journalist from the Middle East would like the organisers to invite more Arab groups to the festival.

“We will take note of the comments to make the festival better,” Manyin told reporters after launching a civil service logo and development exhibition at the Civic Centre here yesterday.

“On the whole, most of the visitors said that our festival was second to none,” he said.

The organisers would work to further improve the event next year based on the feedback.

Manyin also said that this year’s festival at the Sarawak Cultural Village had attracted more than 21,000 visitors despite the global economic downturn and the A (H1N1) flu outbreak.

“We had been worried earlier that people may cancel their bookings and whether we would be able to get at least 15,000 visitors,” he said.

Attendance on the first night was about 5,000 while the second night had a crowd of 8,500.

More than 8,000 people turned up for the final night.

Kuching prepared to handle influx of visitors

The state Health Department has taken steps to prevent the spread of influenza A (H1N1) at the three-day Rainforest World Music Festival at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Santubong.
About 30,000 concert-goers are expected to gather at the festival beginning tomorrow.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam said yesterday the department had prepared for the possible spread of the virus.

He said the department had set up a clinic at the Sarawak Cultural Village and set aside an isolation ward at the top floor of a new block at Sarawak General Hospital to treat patients. The ward has 100 rooms.

He said the department had prepared 50,000 tamiflu doses, 200,000 face masks, 20,000 medical gowns, 2,000 medical suits and plenty of surgical gloves.
Sarawak recorded two new confirmed cases of H1N1 yesterday, bringing the total in the state to 18.

One was a 12-year-old girl who contracted the disease while visiting Brunei last week.

She is being treated at Miri General Hospital while family members are quarantined at home.

The other is a 32-year-old woman who returned from London on July 3 and became sick two days later. She is being treated at Sarawak General Hospital.

Dr Chan said the Health Department was taking extra care of the woman's 1-year-old son so he would not get the disease, while her husband and Indonesian maid were home quarantined.

Zoom Mulu a crowd-puller

With up to 80 per cent of tourists interested in nature travels, the Sarawak Tourism Board is heavily promoting the affordable, unique and informative aspects of eco-tourism.

Various combination of travel and adventure packages to caves, cultural village museums and national parks were snapped up early by visitors on the second day of the Malaysian Domestic Tourism Fair 2009 at the Putra World Trade Centre yesterday.

Tour manager Collin Tan said Zoom Mulu was their most saleable package among people from Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore.

"Eco-tourism, national parks, the orang utan and rivers are all great attractions. Many come to relax and unwind," he said.

Tan, who manages the Sarawak Tourism Board booth at the fair, said people would also be able to take a closer look at the different cultures of Sarawak at the Sarawak Cultural Village.

"Every year, hundreds of schoolchildren come to Sarawak to learn more about nature. The trend is becoming popular among the locals," he said.

Prices for tours, from RM60 and above per person included entrance, transportation and guide fees.

While Sarawak focused on greens, Sabah is positioning itself as a diving hotspot for locals and foreigners.

Sabah Tourism Board assistant marketing manager Normegawati Sapian said the state was well known as a popular spot for divers especially Pulau Sipadan.

The island boasts vast numbers of green and hawksbill turtles which feed and breed within its waters before the females go ashore to lay eggs.

The island's coral reefs are also home to thousands of barracudas as well as other marine life.

All set for B747 historic landing

A B747 aircraft with a full load of passengers onboard will make a historic landing at the Kuching International Airport here tomorrow. The jumbo jet, from Kuala Lumpur, is expected to touch down at 4.40pm, shortly after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has toured the extended airport runway.

“The runway, measuring 3,800m, is the longest in Borneo,” Global Upline Sdn Bhd adviser Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing said yesterday.

Global Upline is the turnkey contractor of the RM850mil extension project. The airport terminal building has earlier been upgraded and extended.

“The runway can now take the Airbus 380,” Ting said, adding that Najib would receive a certificate from the Department of Civil Aviation to mark the event.

The certificate will then be handed over to acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Ting said Najib would also open Global Upline’s Four Points by Sheraton Hotel near the airport.

On the RM760mil extension and upgrading project for the Kota Kinabalu Airport runway and terminal two building, Ting said it would be completed in 10 months.

Global Upline is also the contractor for a similar project at the Labuan Airport.

The RM360mil project is also nearing completion.

Tourism budget is 'not enough'

Stung by criticisms that "not enough was done" to market and promote the Mulu national park and Miri city in Singapore, the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) has handed in a request to the state Tourism Ministry for an additional RM1 million to launch a "multi-pronged and stepped up" campaign in the island nation.
"The budget would be specifically for Singapore. Give us the budget and we know what to do with it," STB chief executive officer Gracie Geikie said yesterday after attending the launch of the city's tram for tourists.

It was launched by state Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin.

The tram, owned by STB Leisure & Properties Sdn Bhd and operated by Park City Everly Hotel, would be used to take tourists on city tours and shuttle them among the major shopping complexes at no charge.

Geikie said the additional amount requested "was not very much". "It is very small in fact. When you convert it to Singapore dollars, its less than half a million. But with that budget, we also hope to increase the number of Singaporeans to Sarawak by 50 per cent."

Last year, 40,000 Singaporeans visited Sarawak, Geikie said.

She added the new Singapore campaign would also make them want to "stay longer and spend more" here. She said Singaporeans on average stay only two nights and spent RM850.

Geikie said now the frequency of direct flights between Singapore and Kuching has increased, a new campaign would help the airlines.

"The number of seats on the direct fights have jumped from 2,800 to 7,000 and we need to fill up those seats or the airlines would start going back to what they had done before -- cancel the flights due to poor load."

Meanwhile, Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development Lee Kim Shin, yesterday admitted the absence of direct flights to the city and tour packages that are "not competitive" hampered the growth of the tourism industry here.

"What Miri needs are direct flights."

He said the state Tourism Ministry had already held talks for the last three years with Singapore's two major budget carriers, Tiger Airways and Jetstar, to mount direct flights between Singapore and Miri for a start.

Miri recorded a tourist arrival of 1.5 million last year, most of them repeat visitors from neighbouring Brunei.

Packages to boost tourism in Sarawak

Two new products will be launched next year to boost Sarawak’s tourism potential.

State Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin said the Aidilfitri and Gawai Dayak celebrations would be the state’s latest additions to provide tourists a real experience of the celebrations.

“Villages and longhouses within a two-hour drive from Kuching will be selected as products,” he said, adding that tourists attending the celebrations would experience the rituals and ceremonies practised by locals.

“They will get a chance to taste food and drinks available only during the festive seasons,” he said in his winding up speech in the state assembly here.

“Joint packages involving the Sabah Keamaatan Festival will be launched later and promoted overseas,” he added.

On a proposal by Andy Chia Chu Fatt (BN – Pujut) to construct bicycle lanes along main roads and in residential areas, Manyin said the idea was impractical.

“We need to consider the practicality of bicycles in our hot and humid climate,” he said, adding that motorcycles and cars were more popular

Tourism reps make a strong case for Sabah and Sarawak

Representatives of the Sarawak and Sabah tourism boards are making a strong pitch at the three-day ITB Asia show which opened on Wednesday.

This is the first time the organisers of the show, Messe Berlin, are staging the Asian edition of their international tourism show, ITB Berlin, here.

It attracted a good turnout of Malaysian travel and tour operators.

Sarawak Tourism Board marketing manager Mary Wan Mering, who had participated in the “mother show” in Berlin, said her participation here was to gain access to the Asian travel and tour operators.

“While the ITB Berlin provides us with another platform, this Singapore event affords us an opportunity to establish new business contacts with tour operators who have not done business with Sarawak.

“I received 28 buyers on the first day and all of them expressed an interest to come to Sarawak.

“The quality of trade buyers is also good because they come here with a strong business orientation,” she told Bernama at the Suntech Exhibition Centre where the show is being held.

Zulkifli Othman, resort manager of Kuching-based Daman Beach Resort, a property owned by the Sarawak government, aimed to get maximum exposure here.

“We have been visited by travel agents, tour operators, organisers of meetings and other events.

“There were 12 solid enquiries which could easily translate into business.

“In fact, we have already secured business from an adult education school in Singapore which was interested in outdoor and team-building activities in Sarawak,” he said.

Othman said his hotel’s business, which was derived mainly from Europe, was not affected by the depreciation of the US dollar.

“The recession and the financial crisis have also not affected our business because our contracts were signed sometime back,” he said.

Sabah Tourism Board marketing manager Noredah Othman said the event provided a good base to tap business.

“This show provides us with an opportunity to establish contacts with Asian buyers who come here,” she said.

She said the response had been good and she was “fairly satisfied” with the business enquiries.

Noredah said the Sabah tourism business was doing well despite the ongoing financial crisis.

“However, it is too early to pinpoint if and to what extent there has been any adverse impact on the tourism traffic. We will know in December,” she said.

She said Sabah hoped to tap the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions segment once the state’s convention centre was ready.

“The state’s investment arm has already made the preliminary planning of the 5,000-seat centre which will be located at the sea close to Kota Kinabalu.

“The project is expected to be completed in 2010,” she said. - BERNAMA

Big names for Miri jazz fest

EIGHT international jazz artistes and bands will appear along with a local group at the third Miri International Jazz Festival next month.

The line-up includes Habana Sax from Cuba, Charmaine Clamor (the Philippines), Rumba Calzada (Canada), Mood Indigo (Britain), Diamond Dave and the Doodaddies (Australia), Oma Sound (Japan), T’Inventielke (Holland), Amar Sundy (Algeria) and Sarawak’s own Borneo Jazz Quartet.

Self-taught guitarist: Amar Sundy from Algeria.

Organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), the 2008 edition of the festival will take place at ParkCity Everly Hotel, Miri, on May 9 and 10.

“This year we hope to attract at least 6,000 people to the festival,” STB said in a statement recently, adding that last year more than 4,000 attended the festival held over two days.

It said festival-goers could expect a broader spectrum of jazz this year, ranging from laidback blues to jazz fusion with Latin, Caribbean and Oriental influences.

Habana Sax will make its second appearance at the festival after performing last year. Their Latino jazz styling and Cuban rhythms made them a crowd favourite and jazz lovers can expect more of the same this year.

The Latino beat doesn’t end with Habana Sax, as catchy salsa rhythms with Afro-Cuban flavours will come from the Vancouver-based Rumba Calzada.

The feet-tapping continues with Mood Indigo who play a wide repertoire of jazz beats.

Another swinging band is the four-piece Diamond Dave and the Doodaddies from Perth, who play Chicago-style blues with a soulful groove.

T’Inventielke, a 16-piece street band, will perform around the festival grounds.

The sound of Japanese jazz will come from Oma Sound, a six-piece band led by 75-year-old Isao Suzuki, a jazz bassist.

Another big name is Amar Sundy from Algeria, a self-taught guitarist who will perform a Chicago blues repertoire tinged with the exotic rhythms of his Tuareg ancestry.

Representing Sarawak will be the Borneo Jazz Quartet which will showcase original compositions and smooth jazz numbers.

Festival tickets are priced at RM60 for adults and RM30 for children aged between three and 12.

Tickets are available online at www.ticketcharge.com.my and at the Visitors’ Information Centre in Miri.

AirAsia flying to more places from Kuching

AirAsia’s four new regional routes from Sarawak will further improve the state’s connectivity.

Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh said the new destinations were Jakarta, Bali, Bandar Seri Begawan and Singapore.

The Kuching-Jakarta flight commenced on Tuesday while Kuching-Bali will begin on May 2 and Kuching-Bandar Seri Begawan on June 12. The Kuching-Singapore flight will follow later.

Wong said the increased connectivity would boost Sarawak’s tourist industry by enabling more visitors to fly to the state.

“With the new regional flights, we can tap into the foreign tourist market.

“For example, there are many Australian tourists in Bali and they can extend their holiday by coming here on the new AirAsia flight,” he said during a media appreciation night organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board and Sarawak Convention Bureau here on Tuesday night.

He called on tour operators and other industry players to work together with the airline to ensure the new routes could be sustained.

He also urged the media to help promote Sarawak to other parts of the world.

Tiger Airways keen to fly to Sabah, Sarawak

SINGAPORE’S Tiger Airways is akin to a tiger on the prowl.

The pace of its expansion since inception over the past three years has been phenomenal.

A Tiger Airways aircraft lands at the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal at KL International Airport – Bernama

This tiger is not about to take a break. East Malaysia is the next destination to add to its network besides three more bases in Asia.

Group chief executive officer Tony Davis believes that the airline could provide alternative linkages to East Malaysia from Singapore and the rest of the world.

He said passengers flying Tiger from China to Australia were asking for access to East Malaysia and Tiger believes it can play a part to promote tourism in Sabah and Sarawak.

“People in East Malaysia have asked us many times to fly into East Malaysia, and so have those in Ipoh and Penang. We are a willing party but it really depends on the Government.

“We are in talks and hope to reach an agreement soon,” Davis told StarBiz in an interview recently.

»Now is the time for the market to operate freely« TONY DAVIS

To him, Malaysia is an important market for the Singapore-based carrier not just from the neighbourly perspective, but both cultural and commercial basis.

He said: “It makes sense for Tiger to be given more rights to fly more routes in Malaysia ahead of liberalisation.

“Travellers want more access and with Malaysia Airlines (MAS) recently announcing a fantastic set of financial results, I would say well done to MAS. But I would also like to say, now is time for the market to operate freely.

“We are ready to compete and they (MAS) should be ready to compete,’’ he said, adding that “for a country like Malaysia, the tourism sector should be more important than only a company.”

“It must be frustrating to fly to Malaysia because of restricted access and the tourism industry is missing out.

“People from Australia and China want to go to East Malaysia via Singapore, but as the fares are high and access from Singapore is limited, they are just bypassing Malaysia,” he added.

Tiger had requested for two daily flights for the KL-Singapore route, but obtained one. To Davis, it was a small feat compared with the “unlimited flights Tiger got for the Singapore-Thailand route”.

If Tiger wants more, Davis will just have to wait till December for the liberalisation of the Asean capital city air sector. Airlines will be able to mount unlimited flights.

Davis said: “Tiger is indeed planning for significant flights in December.”

He believes Malaysia will be Tiger’s biggest market over time and “that means any airport that can take a A320 will see us flying there and Malaysia will hugely appreciate the increase in its air traffic”.

Tiger is also eyeing to be a Pan-Asian carrier. For Davis, the Tiger brand is “not overtly Singaporean” but an Asian brand. The objective is to have operations in Asian countries and employ staff from all over Asia.

Since its maiden flight in September 2004, Tiger, which first operated from Singapore, has managed to set up a domestic low-cost airline in Australia.

It is in the final stages of operating a low-cost airline – Incheon Tiger Airways – with the South Korean city of Incheon.Over the next 12 to 18 months, another new base will be established.

Davis said talks were on going with three potential partners to set up three bases in Asia as ideally, Tiger would like to have six bases in the region.

”We would like to provide the Tiger connection from Vladivostok in Russia and all the way down to Tasmania, Australia.

“The areas we are going to cover is comparable to the landmass of the north and south poles, so we really like to be known as the pole-to-pole airline,” Davis said.

This means a passenger departing for Vladivostok will have to change flights on Tiger-operated routes along the way to reach Tasmania.

Tiger now flies 20 routes in Asia, and Brunei will be its next destination in April. By June, it will have flights to Bangalore, India.

In Australia, Tiger Airways Australia serves 12 destinations, and Alice Springs is its next route.

“Our geographic reach is the widest as we are in South-East Asia, India, China and even flying to Australia,” Davis said.

The cost of setting bases is “very modest” and given the airline's positive cashflow, funding its expansion plans will be via internal funds.

The airline has 70 planes with 58 new orders, and believes its cost is only second to AirAsia, whose cost is the lowest among all global LCCs.

To Davis, competition will be the mainstay of any business.

However, he said, incumbent airlines need not worry over competition because the markets will grow bigger and the airline that offers good products and attractive pricing would gain more than others.

Miri to offer free tram service soon

A “free tram service coupon system” will be implemented in hotels and motels in Miri for tourists and guests here to enjoy free public transportation services.

Under the coupon system, to be introduced by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) in a joint-venture with hotels and motels here, guests with confirmed room bookings would be entitled to use the tram for free rides to tourists spots, shopping complexes and recreation parks and markets in the city.

STB director for the northern region, Lee Kim Shin, said the service would be the first in the state.

“STB is now trying to get all the hotels and motels in Miri to sign up with the board to implement the service as soon as possible.

“The tram is ready for use,” he added.

“The hotels will provide coupons to their guests to enable them to use the tram for free. It is a non-profit programme that STB is introducing as a way to promote Miri and make tourists feel at home,” he said here recently.

Lee said STB estimated that RM150,000 was needed annually to run the free tram service.

The costs of operating this service would be shouldered by the hotels, the STB and other tourism stakeholders in Miri.

The STB has appointed public bus firm Miri Bus Transport Company to manage the tram service, he said, adding that he was confident the service would get good response from visitors and would help them to save money for other purposes such as for shopping and food.
