AirAsia expands in China

Low-cost carrier AirAsia said Wednesday it plans to add a second daily flight between Malaysia and Shenzhen in southern China starting next month as part of its regional network expansion.

In a statement, AirAsia said its daily Kuala Lumpur-Shenzhen flight has received an overwhelming response since it was launched in mid-July, with passenger loads of over 90 percent.

To cope with increasing demand, it said it will add the second daily flight on the route from Oct. 2 in time for China's Golden Week holidays.

AirAsia said it will also launch a new daily service from Malaysia's Kota Kinabalu on Borneo island to Shenzhen.

"AirAsia is now fast expanding its network into China, and Shenzhen is an ideal choice as the airline's gateway to the mainland,'' the carrier said.

AirAsia's sister airline, Thai AirAsia, is already flying daily from Bangkok to Shenzhen.

With the added flights from Malaysia, AirAsia said it will be serving four daily flights into Shenzhen.

AirAsia, Asia's largest budget airline by fleet size, has said it expects to carry 11 million passengers for the year ending June 2008, up from 8.7 million in 2007 fiscal year.

AirAsia X going to London

Long-haul low-cost carrier, AirAsia X, is expected to launch its maiden flight to Standsted, London, by end of next year, says its chief executive officer Azran Osman Rani.

Speaking to reporters after the welcoming reception for AirAsia’s Airbus A330-300 here yesterday, he said the company had already secured the landing rights for the London destination and would fly on a daily basis using the A340.

“If all goes well, we should be ready to launch the UK route by end-2008 and commence sales and bookings in February,” he said, adding that the two A340 aircraft would arrive in October and November next year.

Azran said the company planned to fly to Australia and China by end of next month with the arrival of its first leased long-haul A330-300 aircraft at the KL International Airport’s low-cost carrier terminal last Sunday.

Flying start: AirAsia’s first leased Airbus A330-300 will be used to service the Australia and China routes as early as next month.
The aircraft, named Semangat Sir Freddie, is a tribute to the pioneer of the low-cost model, the late Sir Freddie Laker. It is on six-year lease from Ansett Worldwide Services.

It complements AirAsia X’s purchase of 15 A330s announced earlier. The aircraft will be delivered over five years starting from September 2008.

Azran said the A330-300 delivered yesterday would alternate between Australia and China.

“We plan to have at least five flights to China a week and four a week to Australia,” he said, adding that the landing rights for China and Australia had been secured.

He said AirAsia X was also poised to extend services to India, South Korea, West Asia and Japan with fares on average 50% lower than full-service carriers.

He said the company was considering listing on Bursa Malaysia within three years.

Meanwhile, founder director of AirAsia and group chief executive officer of AirAsia Bhd, Datuk Tony Fernandes, said AirAsia X was also looking to buy Boeing 787s or Airbus 350s for its long-haul routes.

“B787 is real. I’m going to Seattle to talk with the Boeing chief executive officer next week.

“We will be foolish not to talk to Boeing. But the A350 is an obvious choice. The Airbus has an advantage but the question is, ‘when can we get the planes?’,” he said

Malacca’s story to go Global on TV

The country’s renowned historical state, Malacca, will have its presence felt all over the world soon.

The filming of the documentary, Malacca, which started on Sept 12, will showcase the state’s history through the Portuguese, Dutch and British occupations, its people, its tourism and food, and its fascinating culture.

The documentary, a collaboration between China’s television network CCTV and local production house VL Film Productions is the third co-production between the two countries.

According to VL Film Production chief executive officer Datuk Vincent Lye, the idea behind the filming of the documentary came about after CCTV’s president Zhao Huayong visited Malacca in May this year.

“The sole purpose for the visit was merely for leisure but the Zhao ended up meeting Malacca Governor Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob and was impressed by him.

Closer ties: Zhao (left) and Tun Mohd Khalil exchanging souvenirs during Zhao's visit to Malacca in May this year. With them is Lye.
“Subsequently, he offered to film a documentary on Malacca as a gift to the state as well as a token of appreciation for their friendship,” said Lye yesterday.

The four 30-minutes episodes in Mandarin will showcase Malacca from the year 1511 to present.

The first episode talks about the strategic location of the state and its role as a hub for international traders, while the second episode features the history and establishment of the Malacca Sultanate and the state’s relationship with China.

The third episode highlights the colonisation of the city and today's modern Malacca.

The final episode talks about the people, the food and their cultures.

“It focuses on the unique cultural diversity and architecture of the state as well as a highlight on its Baba Nyonya people.

“There will also be a special segment on politician and MCA founder Tun Tan Cheng Lock,” said Lye, who is also the adviser of the project.

The documentary, sponsored by the Malacca state government, Tourism Ministry and VL Film Productions, is expected to go on air by early next year on CCTV4, CCTV9, and on Spanish, French and European channels.

Focus on Stalled Hotel Project in Sabah

A stalled RM24.2mil budget hotel project in the city centre and state property mortgaged without approvals – these are among instances of lapses in accountability involving the state-owned Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco).

The Auditor-General put Sedco under the microscope and raised numerous instances of lapses in accountability in transactions that wasted public funds.

Zeroing in on Sedco’s three wholly-owned Perkasa hotels and majority-owned Hyatt Regency Hotel, where the state has a 43% stake, the Auditor-General provided details of how millions of ringgit could have been saved if procedures had been followed.

According to the state’s 2005 public accounts, Sabah borrowed RM1bil from the Federal Government and, in turn, loaned some RM1.12bil to its various agencies, including the single largest amount of RM305.57mil to Sedco.

Sedco already owed the state government a total of RM278.62mil from its inception in 1981.

One of the purposes of the loans to Sedco was to fund its hotel ventures under Kinabalu International Hotel Sdn Bhd in the city and Perkasa Holdings Sdn Bhd in Keningau, Kundasang and Tenom.

The Auditor-General noted that Perkasa’s first hotel in Kota Kinabalu, costing RM24.2mil, was supposed to provide budget accommodation but stalled after RM5.04mil had been spent for part of its construction.

The Auditor-General also queried the RM25mil loan undertaken by Kinabalu International Hotel in 1997 to partly finance the RM45mil refurbishment of its Hyatt hotel here.

According to the report, the loan was secured by using the hotel and its land, valued at RM140mil, as collateral.

AirAsia to buy 20% of FAX for RM26.7mil

AirAsia Bhd has agreed to buy 20% stake in Fly Asian Xpress Sdn Bhd (FAX) for RM26.67mil cash, with an option to acquire an additional 10%.

However, the additional stake would be priced at market valuation and not RM1 par value, AirAsia said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia.

It said the parties signed a definitive agreement on the matter yesteday.

FAX is currently 80% owned by Aero Ventures Sdn Bhd, a company in which AirAsia group chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes and AirAsia deputy CEO Datuk Kamarudin Meranun are substantial shareholders.

AirAsia said it viewed investing in a long haul low-cost airline as beneficial given that the international air traffic to Malaysia was under-served.

It said the investment in FAX was not expected to have any material impact on its financial position in the current financial year.

It would, however, contribute positively to the company's future financial results.

“Budget long haul service is a new business concept in Malaysia that will require some time to nurture to reach its full potential,” it added.

Hotel shows it cares for the Environment

TRADERS Hotel staff members went ‘green’ when they celebrated the ISO Week recently.

Themed ‘Heal the World’, the hotel organised a series of activities for staff and guests to help raise their awareness and care towards the environment.

The ISO Week was launched at the hotel's entrance, kicking off its main highlight and first event – the ‘Cycle to Recycle’.

The first 10 cyclists left the hotel at 9.30am and headed to Auto Bavaria on Jalan Anson, where the second team took over and went on to Sunrise Tower's Pizza Hut in Gurney Drive.

They then met the third team at Gurney Tower, which took over the bikes and cycled to the final stop at Singapore Airlines on Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah before heading back to the hotel.

At each stop, a representative of the hotel presented bonsai plants to the businesses’ managements as a gesture of appreciation for letting the cyclists rest and handover their bikes.

The hotel also later set up a collection booth at its entrance from 9am to 1pm to gather recyclable materials from the public.

The ISO Week also included programmes for the hotel’s staff like environmental talks by the Department of Environment deputy director Muniandy Mariappan and Department of Occupational Safety and Health deputy director Hazlina Yon, and a recycle art competition.

There were four screenings of the documentary ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ for the staff and hotel guests at the hotel.

SMK Union students were given a tour of the hotel to learn about water and energy conservations, waste disposal and chemical storage.

Tourism Minister On Sales Mission To US, Canada

Malaysian Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor is leading a delegation on a seven-day mission to the United States and Canada beginning today to promote Malaysia as a top-of-the-mind tourist destination.

He is to launch the sales pitch in New York where he is expected to meet several tour operators and members of the media and then proceed to Canada to update tour operators on tourism development in Malaysia, besides undertaking product launches.

He is also scheduled to launch a Telekom Malaysia USA Inc and Tourism Malaysia (New York) prepaid phone card today and officiate an "Experience Malaysian Food & Discover Malaysia" programme in Vancouver, Canada, before heading south to Los Angeles to launch a Malaysia-Vietnam joint promotion with Deluxe & Travel First Vietnam Bank.

America is not among the top 10 tourist-generating markets for Malaysia, unlike Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, China, India, Japan, the Philippines, Australia and the United Kingdom, but according to Tourism Malaysia, the American market has proven to be a strong and viable venture for Malaysia as it is a growing market in terms of visitor arrivals.

For the period January to June 2007, Malaysia registered 107,260 visitors from the United States with a 30.9 per cent growth compared to the same period last year while tourist arrivals from Canada for the first six months this year registered an increase of 28.6 per cent, from 19,293 arrivals in 2006 to 24,811.

Tourism Malaysia Director-General Datuk Mirza Mohammad Taiyab said key segments being promoted for the American and Canadian markets included leisure holidays, beaches and islands, eco-tourism, golfing, diving and angling as well as shopping.

He said the ministry would concentrate on long-haul tourists like the Americans and Canadians as the possibility of them staying longer in Malaysia was higher and they had bigger purchasing power.

According to statistics, the average American tourist spends about US$90.20 (RM316) per day and the average duration of the visit spans 8.7 days. Tourist receipts from the United States were estimated at over US$137 million (RM479.4 million) last year, and 50.1 per cent of the tourists were repeat visitors.

From January to June this year, Malaysia recorded 10.7 million visitors against estimated receipts of US$7 billion (RM24.4 billion), and some 107,260 of these visitors were from America.

The sales mission is strengthened by the fact that Malaysia was named the "Best Tourism Destination" last year by an American business magazine, The Global Traveler.

Packaging Borneo as a Tourist Destination

Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei should together draw up a regional tourism development plan to market Borneo as a destination, said state Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh.

He said the plan should focus on the distinctive and unique tourism attractions of the respective regions.

``Borneo and neighbouring Kalimantan have vast tourism potentials for development. You name it, we have it; and we have what (other countries) probably do not have,'' he added when opening the 4th International Borneo Tourism Conference at the Sarawak Tourism Complex here Wednesday.

Some 165 participants are taking part in the three-day event jointly organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) and Borneo Integrated Services.

Wong said tourism players in Borneo should establish links with each other to share their knowledge and expertise.

He said the state tourism industry had to be more creative to broaden its range of products so as to continue to attract visitors around the world.

``Sarawak's more than 30 national parks, nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries are our crucial tourism attractions. We have to ensure sustainability in the management of nature-based tourism,” he added.

Wong said with 27 ethnic groups, the Land of the Hornbills had a rich culture which had to be preserved in the midst of the rapid pace of tourism development.

``We must preserve the originality and authenticity of our culture and our special traits for posterity,'' he added.

Earlier, STB's chief executive officer Gracie Geikie suggested Borneo be used as a brandname to package tourism products in Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei.

She said the conference would help tourism players in Borneo share findings and knowledge which were useful to further develop the regional tourism potentials.

Malaysia Can Be Winter Getaway Destination

Malaysia is an ideal getaway destination for tourists from Finland during winter, Malaysian ambassador here Syed Sultan Idris said.

Urging Malaysian tour operators to set up joint ventures with their counterparts in Finland, he said the embassy had targeted some 25,000 tourists from Finland for the on-going Visit Malaysia Year 2007 campaign.

"They should take advantage of the opportunity of the favourable low exchange rate of the ringgit against the Euro and also the "getaway" to the hot and sunny regions for the Finns from the extreme cold and dark season from November to January," he told Bernama.

About 22,000 Finnish tourists had been to Malaysia this year, enticed by the "Malaysia Truly Asia" call.

With the opening of the embassy in 2004, the number of tourists from Finland to Malaysia has grown steadily from 11,308 in 2004 to 13,172 in 2005 and 19,000 last year.

"We will continue to work with the local tour operators in Finland, to introduce the Malaysian culture, flavours and food to the Finns and to promote direct links between Helsinki and Kuala Lumpur," said Syed Sultan, who hosted a reception here last week in conjunction with the 50th Merdeka celebrations.

He took the opportunity to highlight Malaysian cuisine and cultural performances to the 150 guests comprising diplomats, government agency officials, corporate leaders, entrepreneurs, travel agents and print and media operators.

He said the warm and friendly Malaysia-Finland bilateral ties had been strengthened with the establishment of the embassy in November 2004, followed by exchange of visits, participation in international meetings organised in Finland and student exchange programmes.

The visits from Malaysia included the state visit of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in September 2005, working visit by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to attend the 6th Asia-Europe Meeting (Asem) Summit in September 2006 and working visit by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar to attend the Helsinki Conference of the Friends of the Helsinki Process in September 2005, he said.

Apart from tourism, Syed Sultan said, the main areas of cooperation that he was working on were education and biotechnology.

    More rooms in Kota Kinabalu

THE mixed development project in Sabah's state capital of Kota Kinabalu known as 1 Borneo is expected to ease the room shortage during peak periods, and provide tourists with more shopping, entertainment and f&b outlets when it is completed in the first quarter of 2008.

The project will add three more hotels with a total of 553 rooms to the city's inventory.

Borneo Trails Tours & Travel general manager, Mr K L Tan, said: "The additional rooms are most welcome as it will ease the room shortage during the high season. It will also help to stabilise rates making Sabah a competitive destination. When the shopping complexes and related facilities are open, we can then package our products to include shopping for target groups from the Middle East and also regional markets."

Diethelm Travel (Kota Kinabalu) general manager, Mr David De La Harpe, said: "Our company is looking at the Russians as a new market segment. I believe 1 Borneo's appeal for this market will be the retail outlets selling branded items."

1 Borneo is a joint development between Warisan Harta Sabah and Sagajuta (Sabah). United Sabah Islamic Association is the land owner. It is located along Jalan Sulaman Highway, adjacent to University Malaysia Sabah.

Sagajuta (Sabah) managing director/ executive chairman, Mr Raymond Chan, said: "1 Borneo will be the 'happening' venue in the city where people will flock to for international events, promotions and foreign brands."

Tourism set to stay a star performer in Malaysia's Economy

TOURISM, a star performer of the Malaysian economy, is expected to remain a key focus in years to come.

Tourist arrivals are likely to in-crease to 21.5 million next year, which is expected to bring in RM49bil and contribute 7.2% to the nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

By 2010, tourist arrivals are likely to increase to 24.6 million, generating gross receipts of RM59.4bil and providing some 520,000 people with jobs.

To achieve this, in addition to Visit Malaysia Year 2007 (VMY2007) campaign, the Government is embarking on strategies to raise the image of Malaysia into a premier and value-for-money destination.

This includes giving more attention to the longer haul and higher yield segments.

The private sector, too, is expected to come up with more interesting, creative and value-for-money products especially in the development of niche products.

The Government has called on the private sector to raise service standards and quality to meet the demands of high-end tourists.

Showtime: Dancers from the Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry performing at a recent event in Klang to commemorate the nation's 50th birthday as well as to launch the Klang Tourism Fest.
Domestic tourism would also play an important role with more being done to attract Malaysians to travel within the country.

This reduces foreign exchange outflows and can offset fluctuations in foreign tourist arrivals arising from external shocks such as natural disasters, pandemic diseases and security threats.

The factors driving domestic tourism include rising household incomes, improved quality of life and the five-day-work-week for the private sector which resulted in Malaysians travelling more often and taking more holidays.

Over the past 30 years, the tourism industry has contributed significantly in terms of foreign exchange earnings and job creation.

Tourist arrivals have increased by 15-fold to 17.5 million in 2006 compared with only 1.2 million in 1974.

Gross earnings from tourism increased to RM38.2bil in 2006 accounting for 6.7% of nominal GDP.

The first six months of VMY 2007 has shown even higher tourist arrivals and it is anticipated that gross receipts would increase further and account for about 7.1% of GDP this year.

Statistics show that the largest number of tourists are from Asean countries, followed by Japan, China and Australia.

The Middle East and India are seen as markets of growing importance.

As for job opportunities, tourism-related activities provided 492,000 direct employment opportunities last year or 4.4% of the total work force.

However, the employment creation is in fact even higher – given the strong linkages the tourism industry has with other segments of the economy such as transport, retail, utilities, food and beverages, and financial services.

As for tourism and the balance of payments, gross receipts of the industry have been steadily increasing at an average of 14.1% per year from 2000 to 2006 (with the exception of 2003 due to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak and tensions in the Middle East.)

However, travel outflows are also on the rise as more Malaysians travel abroad for business, leisure, health, education and pilgrimage.

Nevertheless, the strong tourist spending has cushioned the outflows in the services account.

Singapore Hoteliers all Revved up over Formula 1

Mr Patrick Fiat, General Manager of Royal Plaza on Scotts

It's one year to go before the rubber hits the tracks on 28 September 2008, and already, hoteliers in Singapore are buzzing about what hosting the world's first Formula 1 night race will do their city and, more importantly, room rates.

The cocktail party circuit is buzzing with talk on rates that hotels on the race circuit will be charging. Hotels away from the main action are also anticipating strong demand "because maybe not everyone wants to be where the circuit is," said Mr Patrick Fiat, General Manager of Royal Plaza on Scotts.

As soon as the date for the race was set, Mr Fiat offered a minimum four-night package of S$900 per night on his hotel's website and got one booking instantly. "I was just testing the market and this booking came in almost immediately, paid and guaranteed through the web."

There's been talk of S$2,000-plus rates being bandied about by hotels on the race circuit, although no one has yet played their hand. But with the recent Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) confirmation of conditions attached to the event, hoteliers will now be clearer about how to set their terms.

Following consultation with the Singapore Hotels Association (SHA), the MTI has proposed the following levy – 30% of total revenues from rooms and room packages for trackside hotels and 20% for all other tourist hotels.

The levy will be effective for a period of five nights from Wednesday, 24 September to Sunday, 28 September.

Based on current circuit design, 11 trackside hotels are identified as: Swissotel The Stamford, Raffles The Plaza, Pan Pacific, Fullerton, Ritz-Carlton Millenia, Oriental, Marina Mandarin, Raffles, Conrad Centennial, Carlton and Peninsula Excelsior.

The success will be in the press coverage

The confirmation of terms has sent hotels back to the drawing board to determine their rates. But what is definite at this stage is that hoteliers are all revved up about an event they believe will put Singapore on the world map.

Mr Tony Cousens, General Manager of Marina Mandarin, said he expected his hotel to be full for at least three days. "A success would be for the Marina Mandarin, the Marina Bay trackside hotels and Singapore to garner positive press from this inaugural world-class event, setting the platform for future years."

Marriott's General Manager Mr Greg Allan said: "As this is the first Formula 1 event in Singapore, we are still in the midst of gathering all necessary information to help us finalise our plan. Nonetheless, excitement has definitely been brewing already; judging from some early enquiries we've received."

Surge in enquiries, especially for events

Mr Thierry Douin, Area Manager and General Manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore, said: "Despite being so far away from the race "tracks", we have been receiving a lot of enquiries, especially for events in the function rooms. Given the heightened interest for this inaugural race, I am sure that hotel rooms will be in short supply."

He added: "The tactical plans we implement in October 2008 will not compromise our long term business strategy and partnership with business partners. While we have not finalised the plans for this period, I am confident that they will be mutually beneficial to our customers and our owners."

Check out the F1 route by clicking the image

Hoteliers have expressed some reservations about a five-day minimum package, saying they do not anticipate most visitors wanting to stay for the full five days. "Unless they are technical crew or media, I think most people will come for three days," said Mr Fiat.

He added he would be working with travel agents to sell packages through them. "It would be good, especially in year one, to work together."

He said they needed to avoid situations where a lot of rooms were left empty: "All the corporate market will avoid Singapore during that time and we have to manage inventory well."

Tour East's General Manager-Marketing, Ms Judy Lum, said it hoped to promote the F1 through packages to be sold in various countries via its principals "but this is still in preliminary stages and we are still awaiting a response from the FI organisers regarding the ticket sales".

Work begins on street circuit, Pit Building

Meanwhile, work has begun to get the infrastructure ready for the race. Minister for Trade & Industry Lim Hng Kiang officiated the groundbreaking event for the S$33 million Pit Building on Friday, 31 August 2007.

Targeted for completion by 31 May 2008, the three-storey Pit building will house race control facilities, garages for the teams, hospitality lounges, Media Centre and other facilities.Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix Pit Building Artists Impressions by Architects 61.

This milestone comes after three months of intense planning by various government agencies with the race promoter, Singapore GP Pte Ltd. Targeted for completion by 31 May 2008, the three-storey Pit building will house race control facilities, garages for the teams, hospitality lounges, Media Centre and other facilities.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is slated to begin road works some time next month, once the circuit route is finalised by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile), the international governing body for motorsports.

Covering a gross floor area (GFA) of more than 18,000 square metres, the Pit Building is designed by Architects 61 Pte Ltd, which was also behind other significant buildings in Singapore such as UOB Plaza, The Heeren, The Concourse and Singapore Exchange Centre. Singapore GP is appointed the project developer and will work with the main contractor, local firm Jurong Primewide Pte Ltd, to ensure that construction meets the stringent requirements of Formula One Management and the FIA.

The proposed street circuit is approximately 5km long and offers a number of overtaking opportunities, fast turns and technically challenging sections for F1 race drivers, which, in turn, will present viewers with compelling race action to keep them on the edge of their seats.

More than 70% of the street circuit is made up of Singapore's existing road network.

The project team needs to work within a tight timeframe of fewer than 16 months to put in place the necessary infrastructure for the 2008 race. A high level of coordination between government agencies and related stakeholders is required to ensure that the necessary infrastructure can be delivered in time.

Minister for Trade & Industry Lim Hng Kiang officiated the groundbreaking event for the S$33 million Pit Building on Friday, 31 August 2007. Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix Pit Building Artists Impressions by Architects 61.

Mr Lim Neo Chian, Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive of the Singapore Tourism Board, who chairs the event's working committee, said that Singapore is also waiting for the FIA confirm soon whether Singapore will stage a race at night, and become the first venue in the F1 calendar to do so. Preliminary lighting trials conducted in France in July, he added, suggest that the proposed lighting system is able to meet the stringent requirements for driver safety and High Definition television broadcast. Another series of trials overseas is scheduled for next month followed by more tests here.

"Over the next few months, more pieces will gradually come together as we plan the biggest leisure event that Singapore has ever hosted," Mr Lim said.

Mr Colin Syn, deputy chairman of Singapore GP, said, "It's going to be very exciting to see all this take shape. The sheer scale of the task required is simply staggering, but the support that we've received from all the government agencies involved has been tremendous."

Landmarks selling 26.6% stake in Shangri-La

Landmarks selling 26.6% stake in Shangri-La

PETALING JAYA: Landmarks Bhd has proposed to sell its 26.6% stake in another listed firm Shangri-La Hotels (M) Bhd for a profit, as the company seeks to reduce debt and focus on its own hotel development project.

Shares in Landmarks surged to an intra-day high of RM2.26 yesterday, but settled up 30 sen at RM2.16 before trading was halted at 2.32pm after the announcement was made during the midday break.

The stock will resume trading today.

“The proposed disposal is consistent with Landmarks' long-term plan to focus its resources, both financial and management time, to be a regional player in resort development and management, as well as in the hospitality sectors,'' the company said in a statement to Bursa Malaysia yesterday.

Under the proposal, Landmarks plans to place out 117 million shares in Shangri-La for RM287mil, or RM2.45 per share, to investors to be identified by appointed placement agent CIMB Investment Bank Bhd.

Shangri-La shares jumped eight sen in thin trading to RM2.58 before their suspension yesterday. The counter will also resume trading today.

The shares' disposal would result in a one-off gain of RM102.7mil, or 21 sen a share, for Landmarks. “The prevailing market price for Shangri-La shares is favourable and (Landmarks) intends to realise its investment at a fair price,'' the company said.

Of the total proceeds, RM130mil will be used to reduce bank borrowings and the balance for working capital requirement of Landmarks and its subsidiaries. It is estimated that the lower debts would result in interest savings of RM6.1mil a year for Landmarks.

This is the second major disposal this year by Landmarks following the sale of its stake in Sungei Wang Plaza for RM284.8mil.

The company is also believed to be looking to sell its 20% stake in an independent power plant in Perlis.

International Coastal Cleanup for a Cleaner Beach

THE beach often ranks high among Malaysians’ favoured retreats for an idyllic break. Nothing is more tempting than the blue sea and cool breeze away from the stressful city life.

Yet more often than not, we tend to take our tropical paradises for granted such as trash left behind after a picnic or rubbish along the beaches.

Making it a better place: Foong and Mohamed Kadri holding up the data detective form which would be distributed to the volunteers for them to record whatever trash and debris collected.
However help is here in the name of International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), an annual campaign that’s dedicated to cleaning up beaches in all around the world.

Every year, on a weekend in September, thousands of people gather at beaches, lakes and rivers at their respective countries and demonstrate their commitment to making the planet a better place.

Held since 1986, the ICC is one of the largest volunteer events for marine environment to take place.

On this day, volunteers of all ages will gather to remove trash and debris for a cleaner environment. But the campaign is not confined to international beaches as the ICC is making waves locally too, through Malaysia’s own version of the initiative organised annually by eco-brand The Body Shop since 1992, and with the support of The Coca-Cola Company here since 2005.

Rampai Niaga Sdn Bhd (the franchise holder of The Body Shop) managing director Datin Mina Foong said the ICC was more than just mere coastal cleanup.

“Through this annual campaign, we believe we are leaving behind a legacy of committed people,” Foong said during a media interview about this year’s upcoming event at her shop in Bangsar Shopping Centre.

“This event focuses on pollution prevention and educating and empowering people to become part of the marine debris solution. We hope to change people’s behaviour over time because civic-mindedness and consciousness is not something you can instil in people overnight,” she said.

One of the interesting elements of the ICC was that whatever trash collected would be recorded by volunteers, all of which would then be compiled and sent to The Ocean Conservancy for analysis.

The data gathered would provide an insight into the causes and sources of marine debris, and serves as a means of educating the public on prevention methods.

“Last year alone, we had about 504 volunteers cleaning up the beach in Port Dickson. I’m excited about this year’s effort as we hope to break the participation record,” she said.

This year’s cleanup would be at Batu Ferringhi Penang on Sept 9 (Sun). It involves a 2.1km shoreline that starts outside the Parkroyal Hotel.

This year they will be working with the Penang Municipality in an effort to rope in the local authority to spread the message of proper dumping at appropriate places.

”Just last year, 67% of the 1,500 kg trash we collected were from land-based activities like festivals, picnics, and water sports,” said Foong.

Coca-Cola Malaysia public affairs and communications director Mohamed Kadri Mohamed Taib said the company had, globally, been a partner of the ICC for the last 12 consecutive years as part of its Global Water Stewardship programme that committed to preserving and protecting water resources.

“Rubbish is something we can’t stop collecting, and habits are things we can’t change overnight. But we want to open the eyes of our people, be it vendors or hawkers, who are often pretty surprised by a group of people who have nothing better to do, coming together to clean up a beach they don’t own! “he said.

Those interested to join in for a day of good cause and fun can obtain registration forms at any The Body Shop outlets. Registration fee is RM70 (which covers return transportation by coach from KL Sentral to Penang, shared accommodation at a hotel, a T-shirt, a breakfast and lunch and drinks).

Volunteers from Penang need to only pay RM10.

Cabbies must project good image to tourists

TAXI drivers are very important for the country’s image and tourism as they are the first people foreigners meet on arrival at the airports.

Taxi drivers must therefore be well versed on the country's tourism sites and must project a good image, the Tamil Nesan reported Human Rights Commissioner (Suhakam) Datuk N. Sivasubramaniam as saying.

Sivasubramaniam said this after attending the family day celebrations in conjunction with the country’s 50th National Day organised by the Klang Valley Taxi Drivers' Association in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

He said taxi drivers in Klang Valley had to spend more due to rising costs and the Government should look into the possibility of raising cab fares.

AirAsia sees continued growth in the horizon

AirAsia Bhd, which has reported record earnings, expects growth in its performance to continue as it adds new routes, increases frequencies on existing routes and rolls out fuel-efficient new planes.

“We now have the youngest fleet in Asia,” said CEO Datuk Tony Fernandes, referring to the airline's all-Airbus fleet.

In earlier years, the airline had leased older aircraft that consumed more fuel and required more maintenance. Its all-new Airbus fleet has reduced operating costs and is generating a lot of cash flow for the group, he told StarBiz on Saturday.

Fernandes pointed out the company has about RM1bil in cash and deposits for aircraft purchases, and that's equivalent to eight months with zero revenue.

AirAsia had a strong balance sheet and the cash position would continue to strengthen, he added.

“When we announced our fleet purchase of Airbus, people were bewildered, whether we could fill the planes. But now, we're short of planes,” he said. AirAsia had placed an order for 150 planes with options for 50 more.

“We're going to exercise the options for 25, and increase the options back to 50,” he said.

He pointed as an example the “huge success” of the route to China, which is going to be expanded. “Our new KL-Shenzhen route has a 95% load factor, and we're going to put in a second flight (each day),” he added. AirAsia will also introduce flights to Shenzhen from Kota Kinabalu and Johor Baru, in addition to planning new routes to other southern Chinese cities like Guangzhou, Guilin and Kunming.

The company announced on Thursday a record operating profit of RM185mil for its fourth quarter ended June 30, 2007, which is 206% higher than previous corresponding period. Fernandes attributed three factors for this surge in performance namely, capacity growth, a younger fleet and maturity in its routes.

“We invested a fortune in developing new routes over the last five years. Now, we are reaping the benefits,” he said.

AirAsia operated with an average of 28.6 planes in its 2007 financial year (FY) compared with an average of 21.8 in FY06. It would deploy an average of 41 planes in FY08.

As routes mature and new planes join its fleet, AirAsia increased the frequencies of its flights, offering customers more choice.

“Three years ago, we flew to Kota Kinabalu four times a day, we fly 10 times a day there now. We had one flight a day to Bangkok three years ago, now, we fly six times a day,” he said.
