We want to triple tourism receipts by 2020

The Tourism Ministry hopes to reach RM170bil in tourism receipts in 2020, three times more than the present RM54bil.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said the country wanted to achieve RM3bil in receipts per week in a decade, compared with the current collection of RM1bil.

“Right now, each tourist spends an average of RM631 on shopping, which is only 28% of total expenses. We hope it will increase to RM1,636 by 2020,” Dr Ng told a press conference after the leasing launch of Kenanga Wholesale City here yesterday.

Dr Ng said her ministry was working with the Finance and International Trade and Industry Ministries to look into various duty-free articles to help promote Malaysia as a duty-free haven.

The Tourism Ministry was also addressing the traffic congestion issue around major shopping zones as well as managing and providing guidelines for events.
