Passenger Movements At KLIA Down 0.5 Pct In May

Passenger movements at the KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang fell 0.5 percent to 2.318 million in May this year compared with the figure a year ago.

The decline was due to a drop in international passenger movements by 0.8 percent to 1.507 million, said a report released by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) on Thursday.

The number of domestic passengers at the country's main airport was down only marginally at 810,927 from 811,289, it said.

As for other airports operated by MAHB, it said international passenger movements fell 9.3 percent to 223,135, but the domestic passenger movements rose 5.6 percent to 1.514 million. Overall, the other airports posted 3.4 percent growth with 1.737 million passengers.

Passengers movements at the airports managed by MAHB meanwhile rose 1.1 percent to 4.054 million.

Meanwhile, cargo movements at MAHB's operated airports saw a drastic drop of 22.4 percent to 63.137 million kgs, compared with 81.406 million kgs in the same month last year.

MAHB said at KLIA, the cargo movements fell 19.9 percent to 45.619 million kgs as movements of international cargo fell 19.5 percent to 41.759 million kgs, while domestic cargo dropped 23.8 percent to 3.859 million kgs.

At the other airports operated by MAHB, international cargo movements fell 33 percent to 10.703 million kgs and domestic cargo fell 19.5 percent to 17.518 million kgs.

However, the number of aircraft movements increased with KLIA recording a 7.4 percent growth to 18,857 movements in May, while movements at other airports rose 5.6 percent to 25,540.

At KLIA, the international aircraft movements rose 11.5 percent to 11,967, while the dometic movements rose 1.0 percent to 6,890.

At the other airports, international aircraft movements rose 2.7 percent to 3,163, while the domestic movements rose 6.0 percent to 22,377 movements.
