Many Unaware of LAG Ruling

Most passengers who checked in at the Penang International Airport were caught by surprise when the new ruling on liquids, aerosols oer gels (LAGs) in aircraft was enforced.

The ruling came into effect from 12.01am yesterday.

Medan tourist Sawarlme Datrwin, 46, returning home after seeking medical services here, said she was not aware of the new ruling.

“Some of my lotions and cosmetics exceeding 100ml were confiscated but it was not a big problem,” she said when met at the departure hall.

She checked in at about 12pm for her 1.20pm Penang-Medan flight.

Confiscated:All types of LAGs put in a big box.
Most of the international passen-gers, including foreigners who declined to be named, said they were not aware of the ruling.

All types of LAGs, from mineral water, hand lotion, hair gel and toothpaste to cencaluk (fermented shrimp) and minyak sapi (ghee), which weighed beyond the permitted level were seized and disposed off in the big boxes prepared by the airport authority yesterday.

Malaysia Airports Bhd (MAB) senior airport manager Abdul Wa-hab Mohd Yusof said there were no major hiccups although many were not aware of the new ruling.

All 70 Korea-bound passengers who boarded the first flight at 1.30am yesterday were aware of the new ruling, he said at the airport yesterday.

Abdul Wahab said 10 extra security officers were placed at the three check-in points to check hand luggage and explain the new ruling to the passengers.

He said the airport would provide free plastic bags for the first six months beginning yesterday, after which passengers would have to bring their own or buy them from shops at the airport.

Abdul Wahab said the airport expected some complications when enforcing the new ruling for the first three months.

“It will take time and manpower to educate the passengers. Everything went smoothly yesterday and passengers were very cooperative.”
