PENANG is popular with tourists from China due to its lower cost of living, better environment and great food, said state Tourism Development, Culture and Arts Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang.
He said Chinese nationals were also more keen to study in Penang in view of the comparatively high standard of English usage in the state.
“We will conduct travel fairs and road shows in Shenzhen and Xiamen to promote education and tourism in Penang,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters yesterday before leading a delegation of cultural dancers and Chingay performers to the 6th China Shenzhen International and Industry Fair.
Law also said that Chinese nationals were attracted to the Malaysia My Second Home programme in Penang as they felt more comfortable with the local cultures and beliefs.
“Based on our last visit to Guangzhou, the people there enjoyed our Malay cultural dances and colourful Malaysian costumes,” he added.
A total of RM16,000 was allocated by the state government and sponsored by Penang Chinese Town Hall chairman Datuk Seri Lim Gait Tong and Real Estate and Housing Developers Association chairman Datuk Ong Gim Huat for the trip.
The 50-strong entourage comprising members from the Penang Chingay Association, cultural dancers, artists and businessmen will be attending the one-week fair which will end on May 19.
