Malaysia Government will continue supporting low-cost airlines

The Malaysian government will continue to support AirAsia X and other airlines in the country to ensure local airlines compete globally and successfully.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said the Government was committed to its goal of ensuring that Malaysia achieved its objective to be the low-cost travel hub in the region.

“I am happy to note that some 50% of AirAsia X’s passenger traffic has been foreign nationals, which is in line with our vision of driving tourism in Malaysia.

“Low-cost travel has proven to grow the overall market and hence has multiplier benefits on the economy as a whole,” he said in his speech when AirAsia X took delivery of its first Airbus A330 yesterday.

Airbus, Ong added, had contributed immensely towards the development of the aviation industry in Malaysia.

AirAsia placed its original order for Airbus aircraft in 2005.

Since then, the total number of orders placed by the company has grown to 175 while AirAsia X’s orders total 25.

Together, these orders are valued at about US$6bil.
