Malaysia sets higher 2009 arrivals target

THE tourism ministry is targeting 22.96 million tourist arrivals and tourism receipts of RM53.9 billion (US$15.3 billion) for 2009.

The target arrivals, set under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, is a 2.04 per cent increase over this year's target of 22.5 million.

Tourism Malaysia, the promotional arm of the tourism ministry, will focus on regional markets, while not neglecting longhaul markets.

Next year, Tourism Malaysia will continue to develop niche tourism products such as nature, sporting events, health and wellness, educational tourism, and homestay programmes, according to acting director, Mr Amirrudin Abu.

Tourism Malaysia will also extend the Zoom! Malaysia promotional campaign for domestic tourism to also include neighbouring countries, such as Brunei and Singapore, next year.
